There should be two sets of communications. 1. How have we handled the situation without the assistance of the monitoring tools? If the issue has been resolved or is ongoing. What procedures are we planning to follow to make sure the system is operational? 2. Have we told the vendor that the monitoring tool is not recording metrics and when this will be fixed? If yes, share the ticket number. Have the additional settings and threshold increase on the tool worked or not?

Database monitoring tools will never fix an issue. It’s the experienced DBA who needs to implement the relevant monitoring is present and keep adapting the monitoring framework. Fixing the issue is never guaranteed from a monitoring tool , the solution must come from the DBA who got alerted for an alert.

In my experience, databases are best managed with scripts. We have to remember that the tool itself is a performance bottleneck as it is running a huge amount of scripts to show the shiny display that gives all the info in a single screen. But the question is the same that you posed, what if the tools don’t fix the problems. By that time we have got so used to using the tools that our home made scripts are long lost in the folders. So in conclusion it is good to used tools but not to forget the actual scripts which are generating the actual performance picture real fast than the tools.
