1 Identify the source and impact of change

The first step is to understand what is causing the change and how it is affecting your business. Is it external, such as a new competitor, a market shift, or a regulatory change? Or is it internal, such as a new product, a new process, or a new leader? What are the benefits and challenges of the change? How does it align with your vision, mission, and goals? How does it affect your value proposition, your customer needs, and your competitive advantage? By answering these questions, you can assess the scope and urgency of the change and communicate it clearly to your team and stakeholders.

This may sound blunt but here it goes. The most likely source of this outcome is poor culture, poor change management for said change, or a combination of the two. In which case, you’re best to adapt to your organisational reality, own it and put plans in place to include cultural improvement or best practice in change management. For some initiatives you might need to consider a pause to the project. But ideally you would craft a strategy (after lots of stakeholder engagement) and work through key roles to build a more positive culture, using the change project as the anchor or relaunch the change initiative. This might mean some tough decisions along the way. Don’t make them lightly, but be brave and remember, transparency matters.

Wachstum und Innovation sind zwei verschiedene Dinge. Wenn das Wachstum betroffen ist und das Change-Projekt aufgrund der gro?en ?nderungen kurzzeitig einen Einbruch im Wachstum verursacht, dann ist das ok, muss aber als gewollt kommuniziert werden. Change Management sollte Innovation nicht behindern. Allerdings muss die Innovation auch zielgerichtet sein.

When facing external change as well as with internally driven transformation, the change journey needs to be challenged against the viability of the business execution. On complex transformation projects, time horizons need to be scheduled to connect different change streams on the business execution. These viable steppingstones along the change journey will focus the whole organization on the business execution. Viable steppingstones provide opportunities to align initiatives, to stress test change solutions, and to adapt the change plan and adjust the direction and speed of travel.
