In my experience, maintaining composure is essential when faced with unexpected questions. Reacting calmly demonstrates professionalism and can positively influence the interviewer's perception of your ability to handle pressure. Taking a moment to collect your thoughts allows for a more thoughtful response and indicates that you prioritize accuracy over impulsivity. Remember, it's acceptable to pause briefly before answering, as it showcases your deliberative approach and enhances the quality of your response. Interviews can be full of surprises, and sometimes, a question catches you off guard. In those moments, staying calm is your greatest asset. There are no right or wrong answers to such questions. Its actually how and what you respond. Take a deep breath. Stay Calm. Run the question again and think what could be the best possible response you would do. Be honest and dont try to fudge.

Pause; think carefully about the question; think about the most suitable situation to share, that best answers the question; structure you answer in your mind; then answer calmly.

I would say first and foremost thing would be to stay calm and composed. They usually want to gauge the ability to manage your composure in such tricky situation. Take few seconds to collect your thoughts and structure your answers.

Reformulate the question, confirm your understanding in your own words with a smile. Ensure you heard the interviewer but just want to clarify in order to give the right answer. This is the key. Nothing wrong with rephrase and double check. Better than giving an answer that is off-mark. It can happen that your interviewer uses some jargon that you are not used to or vocabulary you fail to understand at once, this is ok, just rephrase and ensure you fully get the essence of the question with a smile.

If a behavioral interview question seems ambiguous or you need additional time to consider your answer, I think it's a smart move. This not only grants you a moment to formulate your thoughts but also demonstrates your willingness to engage deeply with the question to provide a thoughtful and accurate response. Requesting clarification is indicative of a proactive and inquisitive mindset—qualities highly regarded in any professional setting. It shows you're committed to understanding tasks fully before tackling them, ensuring your responses are well-considered and relevant. Frame your request positively, indicating your eagerness to answer thoroughly and accurately, which can further impress your interviewer.

If they say "yes" and you know what they want, pause again, and think about an example in the past that you have shown the behavior. If you have not, think about how you would approach the situation and what to care about. If you feel pressure tell them, "since I have not been in the situation yet I am thinking about what I would do". Answer honestly, since it is also important for you that you are correctly chosen for a position and a mismatch also hurts you most. If they say "no" wait for their explanation and paraphrase again until they say "yes". Also the star method (situation in the past, task that was ahead, your actions and your results) helps you to structure your answer.

Let's accept the fact that some questions are tricky during the interview. Interview is a communication process between the interviewer and interviewee. Therefore, it is appropriate for the receiver to clarify the message being sent in a very polite and nice approach so that they will also produce the best answer that the interviewer expected from them.

Put the question back again to them calmly,they would also clarify and rephrase-you would have more time to collect your thoughts now and can respond better. At any given time when you are conversing-you will make sure you are being positive,being honest and intelligent.

When formulating your answer to a behavioral interview question, employing the STAR method ensures clarity and impact. Start by outlining the Situation to set the context for your story. Next, detail the Task you were faced with, providing the interviewer with insight into your responsibilities or challenges. Then, describe the Action you took to address the task, emphasizing your approach and any skills you utilized. Finally, highlight the Result of your actions, focusing on the outcomes and any lessons learned. This structured response not only keeps your narrative focused but also demonstrates your problem-solving abilities and the tangible results of your efforts, making it easier for the interviewer to grasp the value you bring.

STAR method is being used during the competency-based interview or behavior event interview. To be able to excel during the interview, it is also important to have an inventory of your past accomplishments, projects, engagement, awards and recognitions received so that you will have the basis for crafting your STAR answers and produce the best answers the interviewers are expecting from you.

One of the best ways to structure your answer since it also used on the "other side" to measure your response. Pay attention to link the responsibilities of your role or that the situation demanded to your approach, your detailed and specific behaviors, the reason why you used these behaviors linked to the situational context factors and and show that you are flexible in your approach dependent on the situation. Only after that briefly cover your results and your learns (it can also contain negative behavior of what did not work and what you changed afterwards for other situations).

It helps if you prepare ..hypothetical questions can be assumed and you can actually relate to a story around it ,how you actually responded to a particular situation in the recent past. Spend some time working on this preparation..allows the interviewer to empathise with you and understand you well.

If you have never faced a relevant situation or the one you have doesn't work for your advantage, think of something closely related and say, "the example I have may not be exactly what you asked for but it is closely related in a way that..." now if what you quote is a powerful example of another job related behavior, will work just fine. It has for me always. I believe it is important to acknowledge that you are improvising because otherwise it creates a doubt that you were not listening to the question carefully.

During the BEI, it is also expected that you might have no direct experience on the situations being asked to demonstrate based on the competency required in the interview. Once faced with this scenario, you can identify similar experience from your "inventory" of experiences, accomplishments, achievements, rewards and recognitions. In this case, it will be easier for you to identify similar instances, being asked in the interview and not to caught off-guard during the interview session.

No person in the world knows everything. Just to be honest, I don't know the precise answer of this question but I'll try to answer as per my best understanding. I'll work on it and share the answer with you shortly.

This point is the most important and relevant in todays climate and in organisational cultures that will succeed. If you can't be honest it's unlikely you'll have sufficient capacity to continue leaning and growing to keep up with todays business challenges. When you remain curious and calm you can tackle this scenario - different experiences within a team means a chance to leverage the capabilities of others. Being honest requires courage, integrity and humility. Stating you don't have direct experience but are excited and interested to learn is the smart approach here. An interview is also the candidates opportunity to interview the hiring manager. Use the chance to learn as much about the role and manager as possible, and chose wisely!

Remember, it is as important for you to be picked on the basis of your skill set than for the company. Having a job that does not fit you can easily lead to high stress, unhappiness, illness and termination leaving you without a job in the worst case.

It is important to be honest if you don't have direct experience being asked to demonstrate during the interview. You may express it by admitting with courtesy. Honesty during interview process can build other competencies such as integrity, sincerity and credibility, which are far important than technical and functional competencies. Some companies look for genuine employees who exudes this type of trait

Consider your experience : Even if you haven't had the same experience, Consider similar practices where you've experienced (although organisation context ) Think about what this question targeting on your practice, then showcase your experiences, initiatives, behaviour and solutions, that demonstrates these practices are relevant , this indicate that you can customise your experience in order to organisations context..

Circle Back Later: If you haven't been able to answer a question desirably well in the moment it was asked and the interviewers have already moved on to other questions, don't lose your hope and energy. You still have a chance to make up for it in upcoming questions. If a better and more related answer clicks you at any stage, just combine it with the answer of another question and refer to that previous question. So it could go something like this: "...this is how my negotiation skill helped the company secure a great deal and I believe this example also in a way answers your earlier question when you asked for a pressure situation I had to handle because to secure this deal I had to...."
