Agile methods are based on a set of principles that emphasize customer satisfaction, collaboration, responsiveness, and continuous improvement. These include delivering valuable products or services to customers frequently and early, welcoming changing requirements even late in the project, working together with customers and stakeholders throughout the project, building motivated and self-organizing teams that have the authority and resources to make decisions, following an empirical approach that relies on frequent inspection and adaptation of the project, delivering working solutions or prototypes at the end of each iteration or sprint, and reflecting on how to improve the process and product at regular intervals.

2 Agile methods

When it comes to R&D projects, there are many different Agile methods that can be applied, depending on the context, goals, and preferences of the team and the organization. Scrum is a framework that divides the project into short cycles called sprints, with cross-functional roles and ceremonies such as daily stand-ups. Kanban is a method that visualizes the workflow of the project using a board with columns; it limits work in each stage and identifies bottlenecks. Lean focuses on maximizing value for customers and minimizing waste in the process. Extreme programming (XP) emphasizes high-quality software development through practices such as pair programming, test-driven development, continuous integration, and frequent releases. All of these methods have their own advantages and can be used to effectively manage R&D projects.

Startups can benefit from Agile’s iterative approach, which allows for rapid validation of hypotheses in the lab, leading to quicker pivots without extensive sunk costs. IMHO, start with a small cross-functional team on a single project to test Agile's fit within your organization. Set up short, regular meetings to assess experiment outcomes and decide on the next steps. Design experiments in smaller, modular units when possible. This allows for quick adjustments and reduces the time between idea conception and data collection. Engage with end-users.
