What are the different paths to a successful data science career?

I think that it is so nice that we have an educational background in data science or other relevant fields. But, nowadays, Data science is considered as an Interdisciplinary science and so many experts from industrial engineering, Statistics, Math, Social science and etc. are working professionally in this field. So, in my opinion educational background is not necessary for a data scientist.

1. Formal education 2. Online courses and bootcamps 3. Self-learning and research: Participate in programming competitions, hackathons, and projects to build portfolio. 4. Networking: Join online and local data science communities, attend conferences, workshops, and meetups, and leverage platforms like LinkedIn and GitHub to showcase your skills and build a professional network. 5. Work experience: Pursue internships or entry-level roles to gain practical knowledge, or volunteer for data-driven projects. 6. Domain expertise: Acquire industry-specific knowledge to apply data science techniques effectively. A mix of these paths, along with continuous learning and adaptability, can lead to a successful data science career.

Today we see a lot of stem degrees focussing on data science and AI specialization right from the college and the real world experience that come through early days data science internships. Getting hands on experience is really important. Beginners need to understand that you need to start sitting with data for hours though it is boring, getting your foundation right in terms of statistics, programming principles, data structures, mathematical foundation of machine learning models, when, what and how these models perform in real production environments are the most important aspects to master one at a time as you go in the journey but eventually form the base of all rapid advancements happening today. #Consistency is the key!

As known, Data Science is an interdisciplinary subject. It needs fundamental but very strong and intuitive knowledge of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and very strong programming skills in latest programming languages. Most importantly, it also needs a very strong problem solving mindset. So formal education preferably from reputed institutes and university will definitely help. Mathematical and Statistical intuitions will help, when you try to solve business problems depending upon data (data driven decision making). Also, as size of data is ever increasing, a strong programming background ground (not theoretical knowledge) to process data quickly will help. That means a strong computer science degree/knowledge is a must!!

Bootcamps and online seminars are nice events for delegates who are familiar with the fundamental background and all relevant materials in the field of data. So, It is necessary to have a nice insight all over the related subjects, before we register to a bootcamp or online event. Based on my experience, usually we are professional at a subject when we learn it by ourselves and implement it in our projects.

Yes online courses are changing very rapidly as technology changes. Also expert people are finding new ways of solving same problem more effectively. Hence one needs to constantly learn newer technology and innovative ways of solving industry problems. In my opinion Python is taking over R space for an example. This type of changes (which is happening very frequently now-a-days), can be learnt by online courses or literatures.

It is possible to respond immediately to changes in the times, so once you learn it, you may be hired. In addition, the content of the course is constantly being improved through the PDCA cycle. Based on my experience, we are dominant at a subject, when we learn something and implement it ourselves in our projects. This procedure make a considerable challenge for us and force us to test any tricks for solving the problem. Such challenges are so important to make us learn an special subject in the field of data science.

Learning is basically self-learning. Motivation and persistence are most important for self-learning. Additionally, you need to plan and work towards your big goals and learning after achieving them. Courses learned in the past, such as in the era of 100-year lifespans, will become obsolete in a few years. You will also need to make an effort to continue your learning history.

In my experience, domain knowledge is a must to grow in areas of your interest. For example those who are involved in shipping industry knows many internal things like what is good time to start ship from a particular country. However, if your data science or machine learning model is saying something else, industry will depend more upon expert’s experience rather than mathematical or probabilistic models.
