What are the different coaching models that Executive Coaches can use?

Initially i was using the GROW model but now i started using TGROW coaching model that follows the traditional GROW structure so in summary: 1. Topic – clarification and exploration of the topic along with its importance 2.Goal – setting of specific goals – long/medium/short term and for the session itself 3. Reality – understanding where the coachee is now in relation to their goals 4. Options – exploring options for moving forward 5. Wrap Up/ Will/Way Forward – identifying and agreeing specific action

The "OSCAR" Model stands for Outcome, Situation, Choices, Actions and Review. This Model is an effective tool in Executive Coaching processes. Using this Model, you can describe the current situation in a factual and objective manner to decide on appropriate actions and to review the outcome of the coaching processes.

OSCAR stands for Outcome Situations Choices Action Review This will help the client to quickly identify the goal & how they can intend to achieve it in a quick way but today we should also include Contingency planning, Milestones & Celebration. This model cannot be used for all coaching cases. Ut depends on how the case is & the client is.

OSCAR is useful model to explore the client’s choices and understanding their consequences distinguishes it, in coaching situations where there may be complex scenarios, decision-making and understanding potential outcomes are critical.

"ACHIEVE" Model stands for Assess, Creative brainstorming, Hone goals, Initiate options, Evaluate options, Validate action program designs and Encourag momentum in the learning processes. This Model is comprehensive, holistic and evidence-based helping the audience to address both their personal and professional issues.

I used the ACHIEVE model for an executive recently. When i said I will be going to use a model called ACHIEVE, i could see a spark in his eyes because, the word "Achieve" gave a lot of inner push in him. He said he personally likes this model post our session & now he is currently using it for his team members as well. At times using these kinds of positive anecdotes helps the client to reflect & respond.

"STEPPPA" Model stands for Subject, Target, Emotions, Perception, Plan. Pace and Adapt. This Model helps the Coachees to explore the emotions and values held by the audience to develp a suitable plan to achieve the desired objectives.

If a person wants to achieve a specific objective or a goal this model works. The client has to be aware of his/her need. When there is good clarity, this model works. If not, until the coach brings in the awareness, it may not work. But once this model is ignited in the client, the important steps of facilitating the growth process happens organically.

A real coach is concerned less about the models and the accuracy of these and more about the client in front of them. These models are god in theory, but almost always unusable as every situation and client challenges a coach in a different way. A good coach will think on toes how to shape a session based on the agility and depth in a conversation at a certain point in time.

All models can provide useful insight but they generally assume the individual knows what they want. Many people achieve their stated goal only to find it didn't bring them the satisfaction they sought. These are often due to cultural indoctrination, and always compounded by a lack of self-awareness. There are deeper questions that must be answered first - Who are you? What are you here to do? Then further enquiry should reveal the values that drive their innate approach to life - values that must be met for the individual to feel satisfied with their progress. Thankfully, these deep issues can be unearthed with a few pertinent questions, enabling the coach to understand these deeper motivations and choose the best model for progress

All the models are useful frameworks particularly when studying coaching as they enable you to understand different ways a coaching conversation could go and different things to consider. If a model helps you frame a coaching session then use it, but don’t be wedded to it. As coaches our aim is to enable our clients to get really clear on what they want and want they want from the coaching. Then we work and play together to get the result. And we bear in mind that as the journey goes along, things may change and the person may change. So we become agile in the process too. Use them as interesting guides and frameworks and then focus on being the best coach for your client.
