Test metrics are quantitative indicators that measure some aspect of the testing process or product quality. They can be used to monitor, control, and evaluate the testing performance, efficiency, effectiveness, coverage, defects, risks, and satisfaction. Examples of test metrics include test cases executed, passed, failed, blocked, or skipped; test coverage by requirements, features, or code; defect density, severity, status or resolution time; test effort, duration or cost; test productivity, velocity or throughput; test reliability, availability or maintainability; and customer satisfaction, feedback or complaints. Test metrics can be collected at different levels of granularity such as individual, team, project or organization. Additionally they can be classified into base metrics (raw data that can be directly observed or counted), derived metrics (calculated from one or more base metrics) and composite metrics (aggregated from multiple derived metrics).
