In the mobile rugged space, Enterprise Android is the OS of choice but different OEMs offer their own feature layers to enable additional functionality or configuration. Device testing means making sure to account for Google's changes between major Android versions (e.g. scoped storage vs shared storage) and also the OEM's value adds like integrated barcode scanners and physical keyboards.

Most common scenarios of mobile testing are stated below: 1. Testing on different mobile platforms like android iOS etc 2. Testing on different OEMs like Samsung HTC Apple Google etc 3. Testing device should also be considering the app will be deployed to which particular market say if it is for india then OEMs should be selected accordingly if it’s US then again it should change. 4. Testing devices should also have all screen resolution considered like small screen large screen. 5. Check app behavior for low battery, memory full, call interruptions. 6. Testing of scenarios like no network connectivity, offline capability, OS upgradation, app upgrade. 7. Testing of scenarios like killing app midway, etc

Often testing of the mobile application itself is performed within emulators or scripted for volume performance testing of the end-to-end solution. Still, I always recommend true testing done on actual physical devices that match what will be used in production. Application testing focuses on functionality, business logic, client-server interaction, exception handling, and trying to "break" the app to prove it's resiliency.

Manufacturing and repair cut-ins can cause unexpected versions of device firmware to show up in your environment when a device returns from repair or a couple add-on units were purchased. If you aren't ready for this new version, you will have to make decisions under pressure to get the units back into operation. Sometimes this means rolling back to an older version compatible with your EMM profiles, but this is not always an option as sometimes part changes (new display component, new radio vendor) might require being on a newer firmware that you aren't ready for.

To effectively and efficiently perform both mobile device compatibility testing and mobile application testing, you can follow some best practices. Begin by defining your target audience and devices, and prioritize the most important and common ones for testing your app. To cover all aspects of your app quality and functionality, use a combination of real devices, emulators, and cloud-based testing platforms to test your app on different devices and environments. Pay close attention to the manufacturer's cut-in schedule for new OS versions. Plan to take a small sub-set of devices to use for testing new version of device OS and it's compatibility with your application. Have a strong mobility partner that specializes in your use-case and follow their guidance. Good application developers / solution providers will stay ahead of the latest platform updates, but there may be configuration changes you need to make in your environment to support newer releases.
