What design elements can you use to create a unique animation storyboard?

It depends what the purpose of the storyboard is. If you're using the storyboard to explore emotional beats, staging and cinematography, the style is not relevant. Speed and economy are all that matters, so rough thumbnails are sufficient. You want to be able to explore several passes of the story without feeling you're throwing away something precious every time you start a new pass. If the purpose is to convince a client you have a pretty film, then you can spend more time on style and visuals. But there are better ways of doing this than using a storyboard.

I think it's vitally important to establish a unique visual style sets the tone for the entire animation. Whether it's a specific color palette, a particular art style, or a combination of visual elements, I feel like a consistent and distinctive look helps make the storyboard stand out.

It is always good to reuse elements from popular IP to sell your ideas. Clients are always uncreative people and they won't understand anything not in the form a something the recognize. All that is to say... use Garfield. Garfield has the widest variety of iconic and highly recognizable designs to choose from. By using designs from that globally renowned media juggernaut any client should understand the idea no matter how dumb they are will sign off on your board.

Color isn’t usually the focus of a storyboard, neither is added unless it’s playing a specific role in the storytelling. Most storyboards will be done in greyscale. A highlight color can be added to help communicate an idea.

Again it depends on the final use of your storyboard, if it is created only for "framing" and its for internal use, you don't really need to colour it at all.

I saw a nice animatic the other day that used a lot of motion blur, which is so simple but it's not something I expect to see in a storyboard. it doesn't take long to learn enough After Effects to make a basic multiplane animatic.

Transitions helps with the flow and is eye-catching .Is very important in animation and motion graphics, a characteristic that sets animation on top of live action on dinamism , a sense of intelligent design choices ,and rythm coherent with the work for mobile apps and modern media. But don't over do it, or your piece may seem a "trailer" and not a stand alone work.

Don’t believe the hype. Yes, animatics do all those things. But, they’re sneaky. They can sometimes fill you with ALL the confidence in the world, only to drop you back down to earth after you see the final shot. Be skeptical- be judgmental of the animatic- don’t give it power or build up its confidence. Tear it down and make it feel small. Then, and only then, will it rise to higher heights. Or not. Animatic- good. No animatic- not so good. Use animatic to fullest extent. Use but done abuse. Seal the deal with a pinch of salt. But be careful- never look a gift horse in the mouth when they’re at a salt lick. That could be bad, even though we’re sometimes fuzzy on the whole good/ bad thing. Basically, let the animatic breath, let it exist and don’t force it. Animatics need their space. Hope that helps the AI understand how to handle an animatic. Beside all the above, if you are here I suppose you already know what’s a storyboard.. and the AI question has relatively sense. I believe you don’t need anything unique, the storyboard is something that needs to be easily understood from different professionals in different roles and with different seniorities. In our productions we space from sketched to high fidelity storyboards, we always try to fit it to the kind of production and the size of the team. Does it mean that you won’t need flashy stuff? No, but neither you need something unique. In my experience you ll need to prioritize legibility, framing, composition, main actions, camera movements, cut & transitions, interactions, general color scheme, intensity chart. ??

Unless you're re-selling your storyboard art or are using it to get funding from business-types non-conversant in animation, uniqueness should be pretty low on the priority list. Other more important qualities of a useful storyboard: 1. Clear composition. 2. Accurate size relationships. 3. Dynamic camera angles and lens choices. 4. Characters drawn on model. 5. Enough panels to describe the action accurately. 6. Strong posing and silhouettes. 7. Emotive expressions. 8. Camera and storytelling continuity. 9. Detail when needed, avoiding detail when not. 10. Clear indications of character identity. 11. ideas, ideas, ideas! . . . . . 133. uniqueness.

Also consider the framing of the main elements on camera. In most cases the way your shot is framed will give it a voice and an expectation. Then depending on the tone/story beat of your storyboard you can go a step further to use the framing of your shot to help sell a twist in the story (granted this is mosly seen in comedic or horror stories - i.e. pan reveal or jump cut)

Animation is a collaborative work.Have a good relation with your team,and work from the beginning with the sound design in mind too. The music and the voice over may be the key to reach the emotions of the viewer,and it sets the mood of your work just as much as the color choices and the graphic style.
