What comparisons can be drawn between layered and monolithic architectures?

Separating modules/components of software into different layers provides several benefits: - isolated modules, helps with maintenance of the software with changes only impacting specific module, easier debugging - with separation of concerns, the team or developers can work on functionalities in separate modules, without worrying about impact to the entire application - with defining the interfaces/contract in advance, its easier to work in parellel on different modules - this process helps in testing different layers independently and isolate and address issues more effectively - Deploying separate layers/components provides more flexibility, with different underlying infrastructures in distributed system environment

Each layer serves a specific function and can be modified or replaced independently without affecting other layers. On the other hand, monolithic architecture involves constructing the entire building as a single, cohesive unit without distinct layers or modular components. While layered architecture offers flexibility, scalability, and easier maintenance, monolithic architecture provides structural integrity and simplicity in design. Layered architecture allows for easier adaptation to changing needs and technologies, whereas monolithic architecture may be more suitable for projects where structural stability and uniformity are paramount.

There are a number of definitions to layers in architecture. Palimpsest is a classical definition whereby a piece of cultural artifact is modified over time. In our time we can consider historical buildings as layered architecture, where a building is renovated, added and expanded, but still keeps to the original form.

This type of architecture often emphasizes continuity and solidity, with the entire structure being built as a cohesive unit. Monolithic buildings typically offer structural integrity and durability, as there are no seams or joints that could weaken the overall construction. They also tend to have a uniform appearance and can be well-suited for projects where a sense of permanence and stability is desired. However, monolithic construction may be less adaptable to changes or modifications compared to layered approaches, as altering one part of the building may require significant adjustments to the entire structure.

Monolithic architecture, where all components are interconnected and closely coupled with each other. for small applications this approach works well as it is easier to develop and rollout a MVP. but as applications grow in complexity and scale, this approach will pose challenges: - with large monolithic applications, it will be difficult to isolate and identity root cause of issues, will have to debug entire front to back flow . - even for minor changes, deployment of entire application will be needed - Scalability issues: Both Vertical and Horizontal scaling of the entire application will be challenging with cost constraints and interconnected components - Multiple teams/developers will have to work closely for deployments

Likewise, monolithic architecture are timeless, a singular piece of work that stands the trials of time. The pyramids are example of monolithic architecture, as well as some high-rise buildings, as it is very hard to abridge once constructed.

Scalability is easier to achieve with layered architectures compared to monolithic.
