One of the things I have found with strategic plans is that sometimes it turns into a wishlist that is looked at once a year, when it’s budget season. I would recommend that for this process to be more meaningful to the organisation is for management to focus on a few things and try to do employ outside resources or service organisations to assist with this these plans. By focusing on a few things this would help the organisation to achieve these goals / plans and by allocating adequate outside resources would mean that the employees can focus on doing their job well and not get bogged down with the additional work.
The most important step is Involving all key stakeholders in the strategic planning process ensures that diverse perspectives, insights, and expertise are considered, leading to more comprehensive and effective strategies. Then, Employees can provide valuable on-the-ground insights and buy-in for implementation, customers offer insights into market needs and preferences, partners bring expertise and resources, and investors provide crucial financial perspectives and support. Why this is important? By including all stakeholders, organizations can align their strategies with the interests and needs of those most affected, increasing the likelihood of successful execution and achieving desired outcomes.
Another common pitfall in strategic planning is the absence of clear and specific measures to track the progress and outcomes of the plan. Without measurable indicators, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies, identify the gaps and opportunities, and adjust the plan accordingly. To avoid this pitfall, it is important to establish SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals and objectives for the strategic plan. This way, the organization can monitor and report on the results, celebrate the successes, and learn from the failures.
Once a proper SWOT analysis is performed, SMART goals and objectives should be set for the strategic plan. A regular update meeting should be carried out to obtain feedback from each stakeholder, monitor the performance of the goals and objectives established, and make adjustments where necessary
The measures must be based on a trusted and proven data feed. Garbage in Garbage out. If employees do NOT have trust in the measurement source then the strategic plan is doomed to irrelevancy.
Well identified metrics and targets are integral to successful planning. Being able to assess where we have been, where we are and where do we want to be, in a tangible and measurable way will allow you to properly forecast future periods. I have seen companies completely neglect KPI’s and seen the results of such action tow or three periods down the line.

To avoid this pitfall, it is crucial to balance the stability and agility of the plan. A strategic plan is a means to a vision. The vision should and may not change but the means to it may....that's one critical aspect to keep in mind....you may change the means to achieving an objective but the objective should not change. Focus should be maintained
I agree that a clear vision statement is necessary. I also believe flexibility is important with every vendor, employee, and customer. It can be difficult to stick with a vision of on time performance if logistics, an employee, or even a leader can’t be flexible. The customer does not always understand that because they have an expectation too. My thoughts are always under promise due to things you can’t control. Be honest and transparent about that! Then when you can deliver that promise over deliver.
From a financial perspective, being too rigid can lead to missed opportunities for cost savings or revenue generation in a changing market. Conversely, excessive flexibility can lead to financial indiscipline and misallocation of resources. To strike the right balance, I recommend a periodic financial review of the strategic plan, where assumptions are challenged, and adjustments are made based on current financial data and market trends. El propósito de una planificación estratégica es tener vigencia a largo plazo para marcar el camino de la gestión organizacional, no por ello debe caer en lo rígido, porque siempre que haya factores plenamente justificados, como por ejemplo eventos externos fuera del alcance de la organización, se podrá habilitar el paso a un ejercicio de actualización. “Strategic Planning” can easily be conceived as corporate word speak/window dressing if all of the participants aren’t interested in it.

It is essential for conveying intentions, expectations, and goals, promoting a harmonious and efficient working environment. Improving communication is key to building better relationships, increasing efficiency, and achieving common objectives.
A fifth common pitfall in strategic planning is the lack of execution of the plan. Without proper implementation, the plan can remain a paper exercise that does not translate into action or impact. To avoid this pitfall, it is vital to assign roles and responsibilities, allocate resources and budgets, and establish timelines and milestones for the execution of the plan. This way, the organization can ensure that the plan is executed in a timely and efficient manner, and that the accountability and performance of the plan are monitored and rewarded.
Execution, execution, execution as espoused by Larry Bossidy. This is key as a plan without action is useless. Everyone must do their task and on time. Flash out all weak links who do not perform, they lower the achievement bar. Follow up on assigned tasks, do not assume that everyone will do their work and on time.
In my experience, Lack of Execution is the main reason why strategic planning is failing. 5 years plans are part of history, Soviet Era is over, having a long term vision should be measured constantly and put in the right route on regular basis. Signing MOUs is not helping too if there are not enough resources to start any business between parties. Be real, be pragmatic and assign resources if the strategic plan has business sense (not just a bla-bla-bla for the media!!!).
There are four main challenges when it comes to strategic planning: lack of ownership, poor communication, lack of alignment, and slow adoption. It's important to understand what's at the core of these planning challenges before we dive into solutions.
Assign roles and responsibilities clearly in a continuing changing environment sometimes can be challenging. There should be a budget, and if needed dedicated resources in every business plan to manage the strategy and coordinate the fast adoption of the plan.
A well researched and superior strategy but not well implemented will remain a good piece of paper/research. Execution of a well done strategy always leads to change and impact on the organizations mission and changes the lives of the stakeholders! The key is well researched strategy and proper execution
Most strategic planning processes fail from the start when they don’t address strategy and focus only on execution. Strategy is about how, i.e. how to succeed, how to win, how to beat the competition rather than execution, i.e. what does winning look like, what are the objectives, what steps are required next. The lack of a defined strategy to achieve a company’s vision and mission accounts for why most strategic plans aren’t ‘worth more than the paper they’re printed on”.
We should Remember, classic strategic planning (on its own) is pretty much dead. What makes it alive and dynamic is #strategic_thinking.
#1 Don’t identify more than two or three projects as strategic at any one time. #2 Provide the team responsible for achieving the project with a clear plan, the appropriate resources, support and time to execute the objectives. #3 Then someone in leadership needs to be the leader, cheerleader, champion, mentor to the project team. Set them up for success!
Change Management Strategic planning can fail, even with the best ideas, if change management is not well articulated. Managing people and processes that would be affected by the outcome of strategic planning is as important as the strategy itself. Implementation of a strategic plan must not necessarily annihilate status quo, sometimes, it's just about transforming status quo into the new vision.
Neglecting implementation plan: Making a strategic plan without a clear road map for implementation can make it hard to put ideas into action.
