The most common mistake I see in startup studios is photographers that don't understand the value of their work and their attempt to be price competitive. Being the lowest priced photography does not mean being the busiest photographer, it means being the photographer with the lowest profit margin. Assess the quality of the images of the photographers around you and determine where you fit into that hierarchy, look at what they are charging and then charge accordingly. Be sure you evaluate what you charge versus what your costs are, don't underestimate the value of your hourly time, and the expenses associated with the service you offer.

Choose your style, Have targeted clients, give yourself time to grow. We want to be appreciated and perfect at the same time which is not going to happen any time soon. So lets be bold HAVE A STYLE and let the style develop

It seemed counterintuitive in the early days, but I eventually figured out that just because I could do something didn't mean that it was the best use of my time. In other words, just because (as a former accountant) I know how to do my own taxes and keep my own books doesn't mean that I should hold on to that task. Outsourcing those things gave me back time to concentrate on the things that earn income. Or to take some much-needed time off in the winter. Or go to a conference to learn new skills. Whatever. The point is to avoid the mindset that you have to do absolutely everything. It's a path to burnout.

Yes, you may occasionally do work outside of your niche but I don’t advise promoting it if it isn’t something you want to do more of. People will hire you for what they see you doing well so definitely curate your posts and advertising to your desired niche. Doing this will help you to become the “go to” photographer and keep you top of mind!

Unless you have deep pockets and a solid business plan, start with what you have. You can do amazing work with natural lighting, a decent camera body, and a 50mm lens. That's how I moved from Art Director to photographer. Many of my photographer buddies had spent tens of thousands of dollars on equipment, but they built that up over time. Yes, they were shooting for national brands and needed all the bells and whistles. I would advise that if you don't have a 100K studio, don't sell yourself as a high-end professional studio. Sophisticated clients will know immediately if you're overselling your services and will likely never hire you again. However, an SMB or startup may not need or can afford a 5K a-day studio. Find your niche and grow.

In my experience studios that last are detail oriented when it comes to packaging. This extends to dance, and commercial studio space as well. It may sound simple but never offer additional amenities without additional cost! If you purchase backdrops, lights, gaffing kit, and only expect the client to cover cost for time you are likely leaving money on the table! Investing in studio space and developing good waivers and insurance should allow you to rent out more than the venue! Take advantage of any niche your space and skills can warrant.

If I could go back in time to give my younger self some advice, it would be to never undervalue my work. Be mindful of your client's budget, but never lose sight of the value of the services you're providing — you're not just "taking a snapshot", you're helping with pre-shoot ideas, marketing strategies, logistics, casting, workflow, editing and post-production. Taking great pictures on shoot day is a given, everything else you're doing for your client has value too.

You can make or break a photo with the right dose of post-processing. In many cases, Lightroom or Capture One Pro, for example, is sufficient. However, Photoshop gives you more options to make a photo "wow" and stand out from others.

Quality work is expected, often taken for granted. Actually, you should too. Why? If you rely on or believe “quality” is how to earn business, you’re missing the big picture. To secure return clients, embody more than craftsmanship—be a person of quality. Clients invest in you, not just your images. Forge a personal connection, be interested, and provide genuine care. Identify the unique aspect that makes your photography worth returning to and work it into extemporaneous conversations during sessions. A photo studio does not have to be large to start, but you quickly reach its limits. In a studio you mainly need depth and height. Invest in good light stands! There are brands that are not expensive! I rarely use less than 3 flashes for a portrait photo. In general you do need a 600Ws flash as the main light and then 2 x a 200Ws flash. More poser is always better. Softboxes come in all sizes and prices. If you want soft light, buy a cheap 180 cm umbrella (parabolic).
