In my experience, successful data governance always comes down to how well different stakeholders align. Whether it's business units, data owners, or governance teams, everyone tends to have their own priorities. Without clear communication and a shared sense of purpose, things can easily get messy. I’ve seen firsthand how setting up regular check-ins and defining roles early on can make a huge difference. It helps get everyone on the same page, reduces confusion, and keeps things moving efficiently. It’s about creating an environment where people feel their input is valued, while still working towards a common goal.

While technical skills are critical in data governance, in my experience, soft, non-technical skills like communication, collaboration, and relationship building tend to be underappreciated, yet end up being the glue that brings stakeholders together to establish common ground.

Operational silos can present a significant challenge to consistency in Data Governance, especially when incentive structures are aligned at the operational unit level. For example if a production unit is assessed on their throughput, they don't really have an incentive to implement data standards that will primarily help a marketing team. Metadata describes what is in your data but if you have hundreds of fields do you describe them all and is that even possible? How much time do we all have? So metadata at minimum needs to label your most critical data so you know what you have, where you have it, and you can then apply protection and controls around it. It's important to remember that the goal of data governance isn't to mature data governance, it's to achieve the business goals the data governance capability is enabling. In addition to tracking the data governance maturity, it's very important to track the business KPIs data governance is aligned to in your organization. Oftentimes, the data governance matures itself into irrelevance when it focuses its efforts on measuring its own maturity versus the value it's bringing to the organization.

Data Governance is no IT or legal topic and needs active business involvement and ownership. We often tend to forget that governance for the sake of just doing governance is a bad starting point. We need to identify benefits for the business to take over extra tasks and see the value in data and governance. To be fair, thats the hard part! We managed to roll out our first data domains with business areas that saw the benefit and wanted to be part. now they are our biggest multiplicators to replicate their experience in other business units.

Central data governance is often seen as merely an orchestrator of policies, standards, and data catalogs, rather than aiding in generating reports or answering questions that senior leaders of a specific business function may have. Data governance should collaborate with business leaders to provide rapid responses while simultaneously focusing on the development of policies and standards

The most common Data Governance challenge and, if done right, solution to most of the challenges stated in this article is Communication! Communication skills are often named as one of those standard skills in a job description. But be aware: communication is key to any Data Governance work, starting with: 1. Lingo, 2. data dictionary, business glossary, 3. Ontologies, semantics, 4. Storytelling.
