What are the challenges of using quizzes for self-assessment in self-directed learning?

One challenge with quizzes in self-directed learning is that each learner will come to the quiz from a different "path." This makes it challenging for the designer to design quizzes that encourage application vs. simple recall, because students may not have the same pre-requisite skills or knowledge. One tactic to address this challenge is to "chunk" content and related quizzes into relatively small pieces that are linked through clear objectives. Some learning repository systems support this tactic by allowing learners to group objectives together to see which ones they've mastered and which ones still need work.

It's a great way to elicit an answer from students using a quiz pattern. It helps us to understand on what level students understood a particular topic. We need to understand that questions in the quiz needs to be specific and not elaborative.

In my experience with using quizzes for self-assessment in self-directed learning, I've encountered several challenges. One significant limitation is the tendency of quizzes to assess surface-level knowledge rather than a deeper understanding of concepts. This can be frustrating as self-directed learning aims for a more comprehensive mastery of the material. Moreover, the issue of cheating becomes more pronounced when learners are responsible for their assessments, making it challenging to ensure the integrity of the evaluation process. Motivational issues have also surfaced, with some learners finding quizzes monotonous and disengaging, impacting the effectiveness of self-assessment.

Lack of Personalized Feedback: Quizzes may provide scores but often lack detailed feedback on correct and incorrect answers. Cheating and External Resources: In self-directed learning environments, learners may be tempted to seek external resources or collaborate with others during quizzes. This can compromise the authenticity of self-assessment results and hinder the accurate reflection of individual understanding and progress. Mood and Motivation Impact-A poor performance on a quiz can negatively affect a learner's motivation and confidence. Conversely high scores might lead to overconfidence. Balancing the impact of quiz results on motivation is crucial for maintaining a positive learning experience.

In SDL, the instructor is relying on students having some inherent understanding about the intent of a a particular assessment (e.g., is it diagnostic, formative, etc). To address this, let students know upfront the purpose and/or intended outcomes of the quiz. Secondly, carefully consider word usage and structure of questions to avoid confusion. Finally, feedback needs to aid students in understanding gaps that may be present in their knowledge and learning (K&L), and also how to remediate them. In other words, it is not enough to say answer A is not correct, but answer B is. Rather the feedback needs to be prescriptive to include the why and then the what needed to gain the express K&L required for the unit, module, or course.

Striking the right balance in quiz frequency is crucial for effective self-directed learning. Personally, I've found that too frequent quizzes can indeed lead to burnout and diminish the overall enjoyment of the learning process. It's essential to space out quizzes strategically, allowing for meaningful intervals between assessments. This not only prevents fatigue but also provides ample time for learners to delve deeper into the material through other activities like reading, watching relevant content, engaging in discussions, or reflecting on the learned concepts. Additionally, varying the quiz formats and content helps maintain interest and ensures a more comprehensive evaluation of understanding.

Based on my experience (I built three MOOCs a few years ago), one of the main characteristics of SDL is that learners do not have direct contact with teachers and can only interact with them in a very limited way. They cannot therefore question them when they have doubts or questions. It is therefore fundamental, when designing the course, to plan multiple self-assessment activities so that each learner can check his/her understanding of the concepts presented to him/her. These activities should be proposed after each new video or course page. It is not necessary that the grades obtained be memorized. It is even preferable that only the learner knows about them so that he/she does not fear that they will be used for his/her evaluation.

Spaced practice of skills and retrieval of previously learned information have been proven to be effective methods for moving information from short term to long term memory. That’s why quizzes can be so powerful, provided the information quizzed appears on multiple quizzes, to space out the frequency and retrieval of information. For example, say I teach my class the difference and similarities between allusion, simile, and metaphor in October. If I want to leverage the power of formative quizzes, students should be quizzed on this information not just in October, but December, February, and April. Spacing out retrieval opportunities in the form of quizzes builds neural networks and solidify learning. So, quizzing frequency is important.

As an online and flipped classroom teacher, I like embedding "quiz questions" into my video lessons using Edpuzzle. Rather than calling them "quizzes," though, I prefer the term "learning checks." I don't assign a grade for the number of correct answers a student gives and instead grade for effort (I'm able to judge this as I get to know my students). I use multiple-choice questions in Edpuzzle so that students can receive instant feedback to inform their viewing (ie: prompting them to rewind a section). I also use short-answer questions for topics we will delve further into during discussion.

Interpreting quiz results in the context of self-directed learning has been a noteworthy challenge in my experience. While quizzes offer immediate and specific feedback, they can also be a source of confusion or discouragement if not approached with the right mindset. Personally, I've learned to carefully analyze quiz performance, identifying areas of weakness or errors as opportunities for improvement rather than setbacks. Understanding that quizzes are a dynamic tool for self-assessment, I use the results as motivation to seek additional resources or support to address the identified gaps.

The essence lies in perceiving quizzes as dynamic instruments that play a role in continuous improvement and comprehension, fostering a positive and proactive approach to self-directed learning.

A quiz by its very nature is a short-cycle, formative assessment. As such, it is not intended as a full assessment of learning; rather it gives students vital feedback on if they are grasping the material and, when paired with a meta cognitive perspective, how they are accessing and using this newly gained knowledge. For teachers, quizzes are an indicator for a variety of things: efficacy of instruction, the need for differentiation, identifying systematic errors caused by common misconceptions, etc. For SDL, quizzes and their results are unlikely to be analyzed to this degree and even less likely to be followed up with precise remediation. The real work here is providing clear, detailed steps the SDL student can put into practice themself.

I'm required to take an ever-growing number of self-directed courses each year - mainly for compliance reasons. Since I work in education, I'm always interested in examine the courses for application of Andragogy (leading theory in how adults learn). I'm continually surprised because these principals are rarely applied. Often, the purpose of the quiz seems to be to 'catch' the learner not paying attention. This is inappropriate for adult learners who need to feel they're personally benefitting from a course in order to retain information. These 'catch me' courses are often perceived as a punishment from above. Quizzes that assess prior knowledge and use branching scenarios to fill in the gaps are more appropriate and humanizing.

Maintaining and enhancing motivation for taking quizzes in self-directed learning has been a continual challenge in my experience. While quizzes can serve as motivational tools through goal-setting, challenges, rewards, and recognition, they also have the potential to demotivate learners through pressure, competition, or frustration. Personally, I've learned to approach quizzes as a means of learning rather than a tool for grading or ranking. Shifting the focus from scores and comparisons with others to individual learning progress and improvement has been crucial. This perspective allows me to see quizzes as opportunities for personal growth rather than stress-inducing assessments.

As long as there is a degree of right or wrong, there will always be someone perceiving quizzes as a tool for grading and assessment. We should not shy away or change people's perception that quizzes are used for that purpose. As learners assess and grade/rate themselves on how much they know or don't know, only then they will be able to determine their learning gap and thus subsequently charting their learning path and direction. Communicating the purpose of quizzes to be both for grading and learning is important. This will help lay the foundation for learners to rightly perceive the learning process with quizzes. As different learners are at different stages and perception of learning, determing the right approach is key.

Maintaining the ethics and integrity of the quiz process in self-directed learning is a critical concern that I've encountered. While quizzes can promote honesty, responsibility, and professionalism, they also pose the risk of tempting learners to cheat, copy, or falsify their responses. Personally, I place a strong emphasis on taking quizzes with respect and integrity, avoiding deception or manipulation. Adhering to the rules and guidelines set for the quiz is paramount, and I make a conscious effort to acknowledge sources and references if external resources are used.

Virtual learning can be a really hard balance. Making sure assessments are fair and a true testament of learning can be difficult to gauge with the accessibility of the Internet as a resource.

Evaluation can be better if we give certain rubrics to evaluate with certain criteria. I've learned that continuous data analysis and comparing these data to personal learning goals would be the shortcut to mastering any skill.

Evaluating the effectiveness and usefulness of quizzes for self-assessment in my self-directed learning journey has posed a notable challenge. While quizzes have the potential to enhance learning quality and efficiency, they also come with inherent limitations and drawbacks. Personally, I've adopted a critical and periodic evaluation approach, avoiding blind acceptance of quiz practices. Since we are talking about self-directed learning here, I find self-grading quizzes mostly inappropriate for the kind of higher order knowledge we are trying to encourage. A self-directed learner is likely seeing more complex knowledge that does not have one correct answer that a quiz can automatically grade. Peer review type assessments and providing rubrics for self-assessment fit better with self-directed learning as they promote metacognition, agency and self-awareness. While very careful quiz design can be done to test higher order thinking, quizzes still short circuit the thinking process, which might be better served by peer discussion, rather than interaction with a quiz on one's own.

My experience with quizzes as both an educator and learner is a mixed bag. While they offer a swift way to access and receive feedback, thanks to their self-marking feature, there's a limitation. Quizzes excel at assessing lower levels of Bloom's taxonomy, like knowledge and understanding. However, they face challenges evaluating higher-level concepts such as analysis and evaluation, due to most of them being unable to accurately and consistently handle free-response questions. It is therefore crucial to recognize that while quizzes are a valuable assessment tool, they alone are insufficient for assessing full comprehension.
