What are the challenges of teaching critical thinking to diverse learners?

For me stories is what works. I have seen that understanding each student and listening to each person helps you to apply content to the learner needs.

This ALL breaks down to affective writing of curriculum / communication: 1. Some students are more visual... so relative photos are needed in the content. 2. Some students want to read the "fluff", they want to dig deep and understand. So paragraphs are needed. 3. Some students want more to the point information...so precise bullet points are needed... Bullet points at the end can also help students REMEMBER the Important points... What I have also described is a form of Marketing and Communication that can reach over 70% of an audience as people learn different... This method speaks across the board to many different learning types..

The multiplicity of knowledge and experiences is a power and a challenge when we think of a national education. Becoming aware of one's own life trajectory, understanding one's place of speech as a teacher, as well as respecting the complexity and diversity of the trajectories of the students who are united in the classroom is essential. Several mistakes have already been made when thinking about regulatory aspects of teaching, mainly because it presupposes a universality of experiences. In Brazil, pluralism is one of the principles of the Federal Constitution and should therefore also be reflected in teaching and evaluations in the classroom in the formation of citizens. After all, the richness of voices is a democratic principle.

When teaching critical learning to diverse learners, you need to realise that there are language barriers. This is so that you can use the right language to teach them. You must first know their level of understanding of language that you are usibg as a medium of instruction. This is so that you would know what level of difficulty of language to use. If you know their mother tongue, you could use it to explain the lessons to them. This is so that they can have a better understanding of the lessons.

To address language proficiency challenges in teaching critical thinking, patience and resourcefulness are key. For students learning in a non-native language, expressing thoughts and grasping complex concepts can be daunting. Simplifying instructions, incorporating visual aids, or offering extra support can aid these students in engaging effectively in critical thinking activities. Promoting peer collaboration and utilizing diverse teaching resources can help bridge language barriers, facilitating improved comprehension and participation for all students.

Language barriers can pose a bit of a problem when teaching; the need to tone down accents for tutors and our students having to sit external exams where English is the only language used can sometimes be challenging for our diverse range of CIPS students. Very early on we detect yellow flags and have 1-2-1 meetings with our students and explain certain words and terminology to them along with encouraging them to speak up during our live sessions if there is anything that is not understood. Having offline material does help greatly for some students to take time in interpreting the information before and after our sessions, however students still come across certain MCQ's in exams where words are misunderstood. We're working on it! :)

Putting students into different TEAMS and giving them group assignments can help in this area... Make sure that in each group there is at least 1 student who is strong and proficient in the language discussed. Make sure this person has the ability to step up and be group leader who will not only help others. ..but build the team up to be stronger students.

Language barrier is a huge one in a classroom .If students are not being able to express merely because of the fact that they are not confident of expressing themselves in a particular language,then a teacher should understand the same and should adopt Flexible approach.

Often times we see how one's background influences one's ideas and thinking patterns, it is necessary to see and respect your learners view as this could help them open up to the pattern and approach you want to use to harness their thinking skills. Students would open up more to think effectively in a class where their background and perspectives are respected and acknowledged

One way to solve this is to give students a LIST of reference materials that they are allowed to use as sources.. This is one way to level the playing field...

You also need to know whattype of background they come from. This is because people from different backgrounds have different approach of learning. You need to find out how people of each background learns. This is so that you can use a way that they are familiar with. You must also know if they are financially capable or not. This is because if they are not, you can't use much technologies in your lessons.

To address the impact of students' cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds on critical thinking skills, it is crucial to recognize these influences in the classroom. Cultures that prioritize memorization over analytical thinking can hinder students' participation in critical discussions and problem-solving tasks. Socioeconomic disparities may also affect access to resources supporting critical thinking, like technology or enrichment programs. Creating an inclusive classroom environment that respects and acknowledges these diverse backgrounds is essential. Strive to provide equitable access to critical thinking opportunities for all students, ensuring that each individual can engage and thrive in the learning process.

A teacher should be alive to the fact that the class room is going to be heterogeneous. Some may have been told to memorise things while some may have had access to more logical and dynamic teaching style. Some may have had the opportunity to sharpen the mental horizons too . The response to the critical thinking will change accordingly. A teacher should consider all this before creating an ecosystem where critical thinking is encouraged.

The process of engaging students in critical thinking activities comes with it's own challenges such as the complexity nature of the Subject matter. Helping students understand and navigate their emotions will go a long way to help them face the challenges that could come up. One Emotional intelligence skill to teach is Resilience

A major call discussion must take place where no one is ALL right and no one is ALL wrong... They need to be taught that their ideas matter! Then they can be broken up into small group decisions where they can all contribute and encourage each other to grow!

In order to be able to teach critical thinking, you need to know the level of emotional intelligence of each student. This is because people with different levels of EQ understands lessons differently. You must find out the level of EQ of each student. Thisis so that you can use teaching methods that suits them. You could also use real-life scenarios to teach them critical thinking. This is so that they can put their real emotions to it.

Some learners may struggle with handling their emotions when confronted with complex issues or diverse viewpoints. Critical thinking is not just about head it is about the heart too.Many children find it difficult to accept failure and are intolerant of an opposite view.Some refrain from expressing for the fear of rejection. If a teacher can create an environment where students feel free to express themselves and also learn to appreciate each other,that is a good recipe for success.
