Computational speed is the biggest challenge Operations Research practitioners have. As most of the real world problems are NP Hard problems that are difficult to solve in maximum specified time. Apart from that model infeasibility is another challenge they face.

Computational speed is a crucial performance measure particularly in case of operational problems that needed to be solved on regular/daily basis. Advanced cutting plane algorithms, and column generation based techniques are available to solve several types of complicated problems. Additionally, in many scenarios it's also prudent to compromise on solution optimality by relying on heuristics and metaheuristics instead of exact algorithms which generally consume more time to solve the problems than heuristics. Proven metaheuristics like Genetic Algorithm, Ant Colony, Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search, PSO, among others can be effectively employed to obtain near optimal solutions to complex problems.
