What challenges do writers face when choosing between first and third person?

First-person narrative is intensely intimate and powerful and can draw in reader very close to the action. But, it is also a double-edged sword as unskilled writers can become constrained by the perspective of other characters. I would suggest being very sure that your protagonist is worth it, before giving them the first-person narrative. In my upcoming novel (tentatively called Illusion), I started with the first-person narrative as it comes naturally to me. But, on the second reflection, I re-wrote it in the third person because I found there were other characters too who needed undivided attention and focus. So, I suggest, you start with what is comformatable at first, but stay open for serious revision if that's what is needed.

Achieving the right balance involves assessing the story's demands: Does it require intense emotional engagement with the protagonist, or does it necessitate a broader exploration of multiple perspectives? By carefully considering these factors, writers can craft narratives that strike the perfect equilibrium between intimacy and breadth, ensuring a compelling and satisfying reading experience

The depth of the scene changes as you choose it to be, different stories can be concluded from different perspectives, such as if you are writing in the first person you become the character yourself and now the reader experience himself in the shoes of the character itself but if the story is written in third person the reader seems himself as the spectator to the character, it adds depth to the reading.

It depends on the type of narrative - what does the author want to achieve with the characters and the story itself? This will provide guidance on whether first or third person POV is better. But, for sure, first person POV hinders reliability and creates more bias whereas third person POV may limit depth and reader’s relatability.

When the story is written in the first person perspective their are very high chances of the reader getting more emotionally attached with the character because he tends to imagine himself in the position of the character, whereas in case of third eye perspective the writing would have to make more effort in order to make connection with the reader.

Writers must carefully weigh the advantages and challenges of first and third person narration styles to determine which approach best serves their story, characters, and thematic goals. Experimentation, revision, and feedback from beta readers or editors can help writers navigate these challenges and make informed decisions about narrative perspective

Though it is easy to share your personal story and experience in first-person narration, it might sound too one-sided. Imagine, using "I" on too many occasions. The content will appear as though you are ignoring your audience. Third-person narration, on the other hand, isn't too effective unless you're writing a descriptive essay/content. That being said, I always advise my students to explore the second-person narration. It speaks directly to readers and it triggers their engagement.
