In an Asian society like Indonesia, which has a strong soft culture, narratives in the first person singular using the word I too often can give the impression of being self-effacing or arrogant which is highly avoided in this culture. One mitigation of this risk is to occasionally use incomplete sentences, or sentences without a subject. This is common in creative writing, including fiction, but cannot be applied to formal nonfiction works. Another way is to replace the word I with WE. However, this also cannot be generalized to all contexts. In Indonesian there are differences in the nature of the word SAYA and AKU, even though they both mean I. SAYA is more formal, while AKU is informal. Its use must be done carefully.
