What can you learn from past job interviews to improve your future performance?

Many interviewers don't provide concrete post-interview feedback. This isn't because the interviewers are being difficult, it's often a company policy not to share specific feedback. 3 ways to probe for feedback are: 1) Ask qualifying questions with your initial recruiter so you can get a feel for how your experience aligns to the role. Recruiters are experts at distinguishing what makes a candidate a good initial fit. 2) Ask the interviewer. Even if it's a company policy not to share feedback, you won't know until you ask. 3) At the end of the interview instead of asking for feedback, rephrase to "after learning about my experience, what hesitations do you have in my ability to perform in this role?" This will help get insight.

In my experience, an interviewer doesn’t give instant interview feedback due to various reasons but if a candidate has a growth mindset he/she can always request interview feedback because It provides a unique opportunity for self-reflection and improvement. By analyzing the feedback, whether it's from the interviewer or your assessment, you can gain insights into your strengths and areas that need development. Understanding the aspects where you excelled helps in reinforcing those positive attributes, boosting your confidence for subsequent interviews. Simultaneously, identifying areas for improvement allows you to focus on refining skills or addressing weaknesses, enhancing your preparedness and performance for future opportunities.

Let me back up a bit... More often the jobseekers are NOT given any feedback after interviews (the reasons behind this another subject for another day!). So without any feedback the jobseeker is in the dark on what he/she did wrong or what he/she needs to improve on - this being the reason that jobseekers are very eager to get whatever feedback as possible. They are looking to improve themselves to better present themselves, but cannot do so without feedback - so they need the support of interviewers by way of honest and transparent feed back.

By reviewing interviewers’ feedbacks, we get to know which of our answers worked and which ones didn’t. This provides ample opportunities to identify our areas for improvement as well as fine-tune our ways of answering questions. For example, even when we answer to questions correctly, we may forget to add examples demonstrating our strengths. So, reviewing interviewers’ feedback places us in a win-win situation.

1. Keep an open mind and ask. If you don't ask you'll never know. Most candidates assume that interviewers might not be open to providing feedback. That's a wrong mindset. 2. Timing is key. Some interviews and interviewers might open the door to getting feedback right away. Others might not. Read the energy of your interview to.determin if asking for feedback right away is in your best interest or later. But typically within a day or two is ideal. 3. Use a networking approach. For example you could say "I value your insights and would appreciate any feedback you could provide to help me grow" I typically prefer this one if you do not land the role. It opens access to a relationship beyond the interview interaction.

Its common for jobseekers not to receive feedback from a mentor, a coach or the interviewing Hiring Manager an HR. In this situations, I recommend the use of a job search journal as I've done in the past, write down the questions you were asked and write down the responses that would have been more effective. This is not only therapeutic for the frustrations experienced from lack of feedback, it boosts your confidence and serves as lessons learnt for improvement at future interviews, especially when asked similar questions.

It can be helpful to pause and reflect upon what skills/accomplishments about which you were asked. Use this knowledge to make sure that you are even better prepared in the future with a specific example that showcases these areas.

When you get home after an interview, take notes and assess the three things you did well and the three you wish you could have a "do over." 3 days later, go back to your list and see if you still agree with your notes. You'll be surprised that some of your initial impressions don't ring true. Think about the interview again and how you presented yourself and how you answered their questions. Reflection is the greatest tool you'll have to fully understand your interview skills and weaknesses.

To optimize performance, analyze before and after the interview. Before- engage in interview coaching for insights and improvement. Post-interview, recall questions, seek coach feedback for refinement. Timely analysis enhances confidence through practice and feedback, fostering continual improvement. If the interview is virtual, record yourself so you can assess every response. Practice self-reflection for constructive identification of strengths and areas to enhance, but avoid self-criticism. Finally, assess your responses against the description. Did you address the key qualifications and provide answers that demonstrate your competencies?

Jot down notes, perhaps ask to record the meeting or recruit a friend or mentor for some honest feedback. Look at your overall performance – body language, voice, answers, questions, and how you interacted with the interviewer. Compare your performance to the job description and company values. It's not about finding flaws; it's about recognizing your shining moments and areas for growth.

Set specific improvement goals. Seek resources like books or online courses relevant to your needs. Practice regularly, especially in weak areas, and consider mock interviews. Ask for feedback from mentors or peers to gauge progress. Apply new skills in various professional settings to test their effectiveness. Regularly assess your progress and stay flexible in your approach, adjusting tactics as needed. Improvement is a gradual process, so be patient and persistent in your efforts. This continuous improvement approach will bolster your confidence and skillset over time.

Once you've gathered feedback and analyzed your performance, take a positive spin on identifying your gaps. These gaps might be related to skills, knowledge, experience, or even your unique personality. Embrace the opportunity to level up, whether it's honing your communication or technical skills, deepening your industry knowledge, or boosting your confidence. Create a growth plan that's uniquely tailored to you—online courses, a good read, mock interviews, speaking with a recruiter or asking your network can all be part of this. We never stop learning!

Identifying your gaps is usually done by reviewing the job posting before entering the interview. You should have responses ready to address those gaps. Technical skills could be addressed by completing courses, soft skills by joining forums, etc.

You have to illustrate you are beyond qualified and average to get noticed. Show the interviewer how you will solve their business problems. That is what they want in a new hire. Use success stories from other jobs to illustrate your approach and result.

Your resume bullet points should serve as springboards for good interview storytelling. Make sure you’re prepared to elaborate on them in a meaningful way and discuss why they’re relevant for this job now. And If it’s not something you want to be asked about in an interview, it doesn’t belong on the resume.

Interviewing? Think about the last interview you had. What kinds of questions did your interviewers focus on? Did they fixate on any particular types of data like previous metrics or KPIs? Did they ask a lot of questions about the types of software you've worked with? Reflecting on what seems important to the interviewers can give you some great insight as to what type of information you should include in your resume.

Remember, if your resume is getting you calls for interviews, don't change much. It's working! Don't run the risk of ruining whatever X factor you have already created just to 'try something' new all of the time. It should feel authentic like you are just using the phrases in everyday conversation.

Contact your local American Job Center and request a mock interview. Let the interviewer know of any concern you've identified and ask specifically for feedback on that.

There is no magic here. There are actually a few types of questions that you be asked. If you understand the "why" behind the question you can feel comfortable answering. Treat the interview as an opportunity for you to gain information as to whether you want to be part of that organization and don't approach it as though it's you against them. It's ok to not have all the answers, or all the experience. It's how you convey this that matters most. Perhaps share an example of another time you were asked about something you didn't know and relate the PROCESS of how you went about learning and getting up to speed.

Its about changing your negative interview behaviors or answers that are turning people off, or focus on how to sharpen up on those areas of in-person weakness that most have issues with: 1) communication - speaking in a way that is detailed but also to the point highlighting what needs to be said without taking over the meeting 2) Presentation - intriguing as information is being discussed, and 3) Preparedness - on your experience and what you did as well as the company, the role they are hiring for and how you relate ....these are usually the key areas to assess.

The right mindset is crucial to succeed at an interview. An interview is a conversation (a 2-way conversation). Both parties are there to learn about each other. The interviewer wants to know about the candidate and if the candidate is the right fit for the role, the interviewee wants to know about company and if the company is the right fit for them. This mindset helps you stay calm and confident through out the conversation and interview process.

Collect any new information about the company by writing it down in your tracking file of job interviews. Use that in your follow-up email or future interactions to show your particular interest and level of attention to the potential employer.
