What can you do to make sure you stand out in an interview?

It goes without saying that preparation for the interview (i.e., the role, company values, company history, key stakeholders, industry trends, etc.) plays a big part in success of an interview. What really makes a candidate stand out is the effectiveness in their communication. It is of utmost importance that a candidate communicates exactly what they think and feel in a manner that is respectful to others opinions as well as appropriate for the interview setting. Being able to communicate your personality and mindset is equally important to ensure that the hiring team can see that the candidate resonates with the companies values. This also falls hand-in-hand with being able to listen well and answer the question appropriately.

Research the company, find its values, and check how you can match them. Highlight your strengths, try to match them with job opportunities, and be open about your future goals. You will show not only you are an ambitious and hard-working goal-oriented candidate but also a willingness to stay on a long-term with them. Read the job description carefully, and prepare relevant questions for the role, team, project, and the company in general.

Study in advance about the company, its business, and the requirements of the position, and assess the suitability against your professional aspirations. If the position is attractive, ensure that you are competent for the position. Choose an appropriate attire for the position that you will be comfortable with for the meeting. Be at the venue 10 minutes in advance eliminating chances of disturbances. You are there to present your suitability and need not bother about other candidates. During the interview, listen carefully to the questions, think, and respond to the same systematically and precisely. Avoid self-praise and irrelevant talk. If you have any questions for the interviewers, it should be relevant for that occasion.

Standing out in an interview involves good preparation, confidence, & effective communication. Research the Company: Understand the company's history, values, culture, products, services, & recent news. Practice Common Interview Questions: Anticipate common interview questions & practice your responses. Highlight Achievements: Emphasize your accomplishments & your impact in previous roles. Ask Thoughtful Questions: Prepare insightful questions for the interviewer about the company, team, or role. Body Language: Maintain good eye contact, offer a firm handshake, & sit up straight. Soft Skills: Highlight your soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving. Follow Up: Send a thank-you email after the interview.

Search in their social media to understand what are their current y priorities. And also look for comments or opinions from former employees, and follow or connect with current ones to understand more about de company culture and career opportunities. LinkedIn is a great tool for that.

Appearance equates to confidence. If you're feeling good the confidence can radiate from you. So if you can afford to, get the haircut, get the shave, get the nails so that you are feeling your best. Then get your outfit ready the day before. Mark Zuckerberg wears the same thing daily to reduce stress, so we should take a few tips from him. Anything to reduce stress on a stressful day is always a bonus! And if we know what the dress code is, try and go in a scaled-up version of it. Put it into the interviewer's mind what it would look like if you were to work here.

clean nails, clean hair cut, clean teeth and classic clothing style with a little bit of provocation with the socks or the belt... if someone arrives to an interview in teeshirt or too casually dressed, no thanks. 1st impression is important in the work place.

Appearance can make or break an interview, sometimes to the detriment of the organization. I am always cognizant when talking to clients, particularly my BIPOC clients about what "professional" and "clean" looks like. I've worked with people who have been turned down for having locs (such as myself), or for having cultural and religious markings being described as tattoos and thus "unprofessional". So to appearance, I remind people of color association and the human psyche: yellow = enthusiasm, red = passion, black/grey = professional, green = financial wealth...etc. I also teach what confidence looks like with non-verbal communication: eye contact, sitting toward the interviewer, as upright as your comfort allows.

Beyond the initial impression, your attire communicates volumes about your professionalism, attention to detail, and understanding of corporate culture. It reflects your commitment to making a positive impression, signaling to the interviewer that you take the opportunity seriously.

First impressions take seconds to form and are difficult to turn around, so be memorable for all the right reasons in your dress, general appearance and non-verbal communication. Pay close attention to the details of your outfit - check for loose buttons, hanging hems, dirty shoes, etc. Add a little something to express your personality, without overdoing it - a bright handbag, colourful tie of socks. You will stand out just a little better in the interviewer’s memory.

Arriving to a team interview 5-10 minutes early isn't just about punctuality; it's a powerful statement of your commitment, professionalism, and respect for everyone's time. This seemingly simple act can set the tone for the entire interview and leave a lasting impression on your potential future team. Firstly, punctuality is a direct reflection of your reliability. Being early demonstrates that you value the opportunity and take your commitments seriously. It's a tangible display of your organizational skills and your ability to manage time effectively—a quality that is highly prized in most professional environments.

Respect is the basis of human interaction. Treat everyone with respect and compassion. Always arrive a bit early, not on an empty stomach and not needed the bathroom. Accept water, coffee and everything offered to you, even if you just sip it. I sat in many interviews as a recruiter and I can tell you that human contact and transferable and soft skills are critical in the decision making process. A company will be willing to train you into the job but nobody will train you from being an arrogant prick to a nice colleague.

Don’t answer questions based on what you think the interviewer wants to hear. There is no one in the world that knows you better than you. Tell your story and, when you do, you can leave the interview knowing that you didn’t “lose.”

The STAR format is a great mnemonic to help you deal with nerves, but don't be too rigid or try to regurgitate a memorized answer as it will only make you sound like a robot. Simply have a conversation as you discuss your challenges, actions, and results with special emphasis on the actions you took to get to the result. Don't fear vulnerability as it's a great path to demonstrate resilience, elasticity, and persistence.

Be specific and please DO NOT describe the role. Describe the impact of the role. Example: In my role as a consultant, I secured 2M GBP of income with corporate accounts over a period of 6 months. Those 2M GBP represented 25% 0f the total sales of our consulting department...

Do not think you have to be humble and wait for someone to pull out your experience and accomplishments. They do not have time or energy to do that, so it is your responsibility. Remember for every person who downplays themselves, there is someone else who lies who gets the job. Do not let that happen.

One of my favorite question, that will help you set your self apart from the rest is: What would success look like for this role in a year? This enables you to understand clear expectations and vision for the role, at the same time help them see you thinking big and seeing yourself in the role.

Ask questions such as: Am I replacing someone? if so, where did this person go? Is it a new role? is there a work plan in place already for the role? I used to ask questions such as: How many candidates are being interviewed? Why was I short listed? Will there be a 2nd interview process? What do you need to make a decision? Those questions often created a bound with the interviewers. I always left the interview wishing them to find the perfect candidate. Be You! if it is yours, it is yours. If it is not yours, something better is coming your way.

As someone who interviews candidates regularly, nothing is more disappointing than a candidate who does not ask questions. That shows you were not prepared and may not have been listening during the interview. One candidate I interviewed recently asked a lot of questions, and one that stood out to me was when he asked, " Are there any questions that I should've asked but didn't? " This allowed me to share more insights about the role.

The interview might be over, but the opportunity to make a lasting impression continues with a well-timed and thoughtful follow-up. Sending a thank-you note after an interview is not just a courteous gesture; it's a strategic move that can set you apart from other candidates and leave a positive and memorable impression on your potential employer. Firstly, a thank-you note is a chance to express gratitude for the opportunity. It shows that you appreciate the time and effort the interviewers dedicated to meeting with you. This simple act of politeness reflects positively on your character, demonstrating that you understand and value the importance of acknowledging the efforts of others.

Use this opportunity to showcase your soft skills by sending a handwritten thank you note to not only the person who interviewed you but to the receptionist as well. These small gestures provide such an incredible impression of your personality.

Another way of standing out in an interview is by nailing the answer to what is often the first question: can you tell me about yourself? Have your 'elevator pitch' prepared so that in a few minutes you can start strong and confident by addressing these elements: 1. Background: where are you from, how did this shape you? 2. Experience: what have you done so far, what is the common thread? 3. Achievements: how have you been recognized, what are you known for? 4. Strengths: what are you both good at and passionate about? 5. Values: what gets you up in the morning? 6. Goals: what is your vision for work and life?

Ask yourself this one question: "Why should they pick me instead of anyone else?" Write down your answer, say it out loud, and know why you're the best fit for that role. Going in with that knowledge is going to help separate you from everyone else.

To ace an interview for an arts leadership role, spotlight your passion for the arts, showcase leadership experience, and provide concrete examples of successful project management. Highlight your strategic thinking skills and demonstrate a strong connection to the organization's mission and values. Be authentic and show that you're not just seeking a job but a meaningful contribution to the arts community.

Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to answer behavioral questions like "tell me about a time when..."- If you don't have experiences at work, don't hesitate to talk about your achievements in schools, volunteering, or interning. Additionally, if you don't know of a situation that's appropriate, give a very confident hypothetical of what you would do in that situation. "While, I've never had conflict with a colleague before, if it were to happen, I would..."

Perhaps networking would be much as the elemental that mention above. Simply way to describe networking are, what if we already checked all the preferences list above to make ourselves stand out but still feel nervous or inferior between another candidates that looks better than us ? Then we can search and try another approach, which is by networking. The terms of networking it self are consist from abilty and skills to build and maintaining good relationship not just professional context but also as personal. Ussualy with networking, we could seek and ask references about the company, the vision and mission, the value, the company climates, the colleague and others that related from the job after we seek ourselves by internet.
