What can you do to make the most of your first year as a teacher?

In today's classroom where everyone is worried about technology, AI, and arguing over curriculum, there is one aspect of teaching that every first-year should spend most of his/her time. Take time everyday to show your students you CARE about them as people. This investment in human connection will pay off in unexpected ways and will allow you to navigate the first year of a career that will be littered with mistakes and challenges. Never forget, as adults, we don't remember the great teachers of our past because of how smart they were or how organized the classroom was. We remember teachers that cared about us and saw us as real people.

Build Relationships: Learn about your students' interests, strengths, and challenges. Be approachable, Collaborate with fellow teachers to share resources and support each other. Professional Development: Seek growth opportunities. Attend workshops, join teacher networks, and stay updated with educational research. Reflect: Reflect on your teaching methods. Identify what works well and areas for improvement. Be open to feedback Self-Care: Teaching can be demanding, prioritize your well-being. Maintain a work-life balance, and ensure you get enough rest. Remember to Have Fun: Teaching is a rewarding profession. Enjoy the journey, celebrate small victories, and remember that making a difference takes time.

Take one lesson at a time, take a day at a time, take one week at a time. Strive to build professional relationships with peers who are invested in your growth, who are good listeners, who provide honest feedback, who are able to help you find your questions and answers and are able to support you in finding your identity as a teacher.

To make the most of your first year as a teacher, it is essential to prioritize understanding your learners. Begin by comprehensively understanding their individual learning styles, preferences, and needs. Recognize and appreciate the diversity within your classroom, taking note of varying backgrounds, abilities, and interests. This foundational understanding will empower you to tailor your teaching approach to cater to the unique needs of each student.

My first year teaching was so challenging and unlike any challenge I had had up until that point. Connecting with others and having a great mentor helped to normalize that struggle a bit. In addition, seeking out advice from my mentor and others allowed me to prioritize what I should be focusing on which helped me to grow and be more successful as a teacher.

Seeking support isn't a sign of weakness; rather, it's a testament to one's commitment to continuous improvement. Collaborating with experienced colleagues or mentors offers a treasure trove of insights, wisdom, and tried-and-tested methods that textbooks simply can't provide.

The first year is always intimidating. Having a network of support will go a long way. Humility is key. Be intentional about learning from co-teachers who have been in the field for years. They will be more than happy to give you tips and tricks from classroom management to sharing their resources. Extend your genuine gratitude in every little thing they share with you. When the time comes, give back the same support to new teachers.

I was fortunate enough to have a great mentor my first year teaching. Having a patient and seasoned mentor is essential for success!

As a first-year teacher, my biggest supporter was my mentor teacher. I was blessed with a mentor teacher who was always willing to answer all of my crazy questions. If you aren't assigned a mentor teacher, seek one out yourself!

Finding a planning system that works for you is essential - and this might take a few attempts. I’ve tried daybooks/teacher planners, digital planners, flat-spread term calendars, school diaries and more! Having a clear idea of the sequence of learning ahead is crucial to leave yourself the capacity to be flexible (see the next point) while being responsive to the unexpected deadlines that crop up each day. This will help students to build connections between concepts as well.

First and foremost, understand that teaching is hard work and you will get better and better at it each year. Give yourself room to grow. No one expects you to be perfect. Love your students as much as you love your subject area. Remember you are teaching students not a subject. Get to know them. Build a mutual trust and let them know it the classroom is theirs as well. Where the goal is for all to learn. Hone in on their interests and talents and build upon their deficiencies. Learning is a process and you are all in this together! Enjoy the journey.

Planning ahead of time is vital in achieving the desired goals or agenda set for the academic year. Planning gives one much room for either infusing new ideas or deleting one from the set ideas. It gives one assurance that I am in charge and no chances

Planning and prioritizing is key until a point, it is also important to be able to adapt to unexpected changes that might happen.

Especially if you are new at your work environment, don’t take on every possible task you might fit in to. Get to know the work environment, ask your colleagues, where help is needed and find a spot, which fits your strengths most. Focus on that task and build yourself a reputation. From there on you can take on new challenges, but always be considerate about your time. If you try to do to many things at once, the quality of your work will decrease over all and that might do more damage to yourself and your career, than only taking on a single thing. Lastly don’t forget your primary reason for working as a teacher: teaching! The quality of your lessons is far more important, than some little extra task.

My first year in Academia after more than a decade of industry experience was all about observation and learning. Understand the audience, make the subject simple to comprehend and execute. Be always approachable for guidance and support. Keep upskilling.

One thing I have found helpful is understanding the curriculum and having subject knowledge is useful in helping the teacher adapt to the learners needs.

In my experience I had to learn to be flexible when I was a first year teacher. I would set goals and have a plan for the day. Sometimes I had to change those lesson plans based on what was happening in my class with a scholar or the school schedule when change. When I learned that things happened out of my control but had to be ready to adapt and be flexible my first year was not as stressful. Always over plan but know that you may have to change at a drop of a hat.

Being flexible with the lesson and modifying small parts to help them conquer one step at a time, modifying the steps really helps them adapt and grow. This will also give them confidence to overcome the next obstacle to gain more faith in themselves when the student is participating in a then next step to accomplish that skill thats being taught

Forget your preconceived ideas of what school was like when you were there, especially middle and high school. If you can’t adapt to and teach how kids learn today, you’re just spinning your wheels and will burnout.

Continuous self-reflection is also crucial. Regularly assess your teaching strategies, seek feedback from colleagues, and be open to adapting your methods based on what proves effective for your students. Embrace professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and stay updated on educational best practices.

Take the opportunity to learn from others in your school/department who are experts in areas you think you lack. Every school has teachers who are great and who you can learn from. Talk to your admin about being able to take some time to visit these teachers in the classroom setting and see what you can take from them to add to your repertoire.

PUT IN THE TIME! Regardless of your background, there is a tremendous learning curve in first year of teacher. Get to work early, be ready for your students when they arrive. Carefully craft your lessons to maximize efficiency. After the lessons, take notes on what worked well and what you may need to revamp next time around. Stay late and connect with veteran teachers who can become resources for you. Embed yourself in the community by attending extra-curricular events (plays, dances, shows, sports). This will pay off 10x in the long run. One of the most important things to consider is attendance. Your first year will be exhausting, but taking additional days off will result in more work and feeling overwhelmed making up content.

When I was a new teacher, I can remember beating myself up and feeling completely defeated if a lesson didn’t go well. Later,I realized that having those failures gave me a chance to improve. We learn from our mistakes; it’s trite and true. Know that we were all beginners once. As a new teacher, you are bringing a fresh perspective about current pedagogical methods. That energy and infusion of new ideas is vital for the teaching profession to stay current and responsive. Share your struggles with other teachers. They will have had and are having similar experiences. Others may have effective strategies and tools and, if not, you have the same problem to solve. Put your heads together and think of something you may not have tried before.

I believe that the most important thing a first year teacher can do is go with the flow- stay unstressed and realize, you will make mistakes. Dont lose yourself in coulda, shoulda. Reflect. Have a notepad, take notes for: next time, next beginning of year, next grading, next Christmas break, next class party, etc. Also, listen to other people's work arounds and be more listener than teller. Build a repoire with veteran teachers and get into a sharing group for support and ideas. Keep fresh always. Try to keep the kids guessing what you will do in some way- my 38th yr. with kids! Admin too-but always worked with them. They are the life of a teaching career, not the other positions you think you want, away from a class or in an office!

Exploit your newness. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experiment in ways that might not be accepted further down the line. You owe it to yourself to find what works for you, but schools also benefit from injections of novelty and innovation. It’s easier to disrupt the status quo as a new teacher, and that’s an opportunity you don’t want to regret missing.

This is a must! If you are passionate and enjoy what you’re doing, you’re more likely to have more engaged students and more learning happening in the class! We mainly remember 2 kinds of teachers from school: the ones we looked up to and the ones we were terrified of! Be the one the kids will remember and have nice memories of!

Remember you work to live and not live to work. You have a wonderful professional job that grants you time. Go out and enjoy that time.

Teaching is an art, the teacher have to attract students attention during the lesson delivery. So to be accepted by the students the teacher have to act like the actor in front of the audiences.

Strong relationships with teaching and non teaching staff including the front office admin team will give you reassurance. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance or seek advice. Concentrate more on your students than curriculum. Build relationships and rapport,set firm expectations, rules and goals whilst being flexible in their means, learners are unique diverse, so should your approach be to them Avoid comparing yourself to experienced teachers. Remember, you are still learning and it took years for your colleagues to figure it out. Seek a solid work - life balance, nobody wins if you’re burnt out. Have interests and hobbies outside of teaching. Focus on self care and don’t just chat about work and your students when you’re at home.

Key classroom management skills are: 1. Establish Clear Expectations Lay out your rules and expectations from day one. Make sure students know what's expected of them in terms of behavior, participation, and assignments. Be Consistent! 2. Build Positive Relationships Connect with your students on a personal level. Show genuine interest in their lives and experiences. A positive teacher-student relationship makes a difference in classroom dynamics. 3. Effective Communication Keep the communication channels open. Listen actively to your students and address concerns promptly. Keep parents in the loop about their child's progress and any issues that may arise. Humor and emojis can be great tools to lighten the atmosphere.

During your first year of teaching, here are a few important things you should do..... - Find yourself a mentor (or two) who can guide you as continue to grow in your practice. - Seek out constructive feedback on your lesson plans and overall teaching practice from a trusted colleague or your instructional coach (if you have one at the school). As a first year teacher, mistakes are inevitable so have an open mind to learning and working towards improving yourself each and every day. - Engage in daily reflection on your teaching practice. If you're not honest about how you're performing or making an effort to identify your areas of growth, how do you expect to enhance your practice?

Make mistakes. Focus on building your capacity in one area at a time. Reflect often. Don't beat yourself up. Focus on classroom management. Build relationships. Take nuggets on advice from veterans who align with your standards. Laugh as often as you can. Remember it's your first year.

Teaching is learning again. In the first year, you are amongst strangers with their talents and abilities. You can observe and learn some skills. As a teacher, being observant is a unique skill which will help you in handling the children - your students. There you will be able to identify slow learners, specially able etc type of students whom you can guide and mentor in a more planned way. First year will be the year, where you will learn how to fend for yourself as all will not share their know how with you. You have to read, learn and plan your own lessons and activities. Be creative. Take extra responsibility to outshine others. Showcase your talents. Attend as many workshops to enhance your skill set. Learning never ends.
