What can you do to foster innovation in your team?

Foster innovation on your team by leading with innovative thinking and action. Unless you've hired a team of innovation experts, don't assume everyone knows what innovating is. Model the behavior you want, communicate the outcome you want, and create an environment open to asking questions, exploration, fast failing, and making space for all voices at the table. Ensure that there are multiple ways of communicating and interacting, not just mtgs, or just speaking. Give people multiple paths to input (groups, email, mtgs, 1-1, surveys, whiteboarding, role-playing scenarios, focus group sessions, lunch and learns, innovation sessions, etc) whatever is relevant to your team. Play, fun, and team building is great for trust and connection.

Recruiting people of great caliber who have a combination of an amazing attitude, strong backgrounds, experiences, and technical skill sets is key to building a diverse team that can foster creativity, innovation, and a broader knowledge base.

Encourage Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration. Promoting knowledge-sharing and collaboration within your team can help team members learn from one another, spark new ideas, and create a supportive environment where innovation thrives. Consider implementing the following strategies: 1. Encourage team members to share their expertise through presentations, workshops, or mentoring opportunities. 2. Create a shared repository of resources, such as articles, tutorials, and case studies, that team members can contribute to and learn from. 3. Leverage collaboration tools, such as Slack, Trello, or Microsoft Teams, to facilitate communication and teamwork on projects.

Don't try to accomplish everything at once. Set a steady pace. Innovation is a mindset and a way of life/ doing business. It's not something you do once and check off your list - not if you want to be successful at it. See what other innovators are doing. Lift them up. Let them inspire you. Verbalize that to your team. Expand beyond your industry. Challenge yourself to spot innovation everywhere you go. For example, I'm a huge fan of Project Runway. Not because of fashion, I'm hopeless with fashion, but the innovation fascinates me. I saw an episode years ago where designers made garbage into couture. Now I watch the show to be inspired. It taught me much about innovation and exploring design thinking.
