What are the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs when planning their career paths?

When defining your vision, at the time you decide you want to be an entrepreneur - ensure you have practical experience. I suggest at least 2 years work experience, ideally in your functional area of interest e.g. HR, and industry e.g., healthcare. That way you have a better understanding of how, ideally large, organisations work end-to-end. Often new entrepreneurs are trying to build something without having experienced some foundation in their target interest - they may find it's not for them during the process and shift to an area that fits better with their natural talent. As they say, you don't know what you don't know.

There are two key moments in your career when you can take risks: When you have nothing to lose but time, ie with a couple of years of experience after your studies, around 27, and when you have acquired decent financial stability and have dealt with toddler phase, around 42. Those are, in my experience, the 2 best moments to start a company. Before is too early wisdom-wise, later is too late stamina-wise.

One of the biggest challenges I have found in my career is the lack of focus between sales and product. Most entrepreneurs focus entirely on product development and coming up with the best product but in most cases, if the product is not making any sales the entrepreneurs continue losing money, and before they know it they don't have enough cash flow to continue running their business. I found it wise to focus on making a sale regardless of the stage of the product. This approach is in line with Human Design Thinking.

If you are starting your entrepreneurial journey with some experience (2+ Years), you already have a career identity. You might be a Marketing/Product/Operation/HR/Sales/Etc person. If you like your identity, in your startup take this org in your command and build a perfect team. This will help you develop a depth in the current role and at the same time will take you years ahead of your peers since you will get an exposure which only C-suits get. If you were not fond of your identity before, entrepreneurship gives you a chance to reset it. As a founder you wear multiple hats and you get a chance to try new things. Once you like a new portfolio, follow step-1 and develop expertise. This will help you set vision for your career.

Sleep takes a backseat. It simply does. It is incredibly difficult to build a successful company without the requisite commitment. However one significant hack in my life has been leveraging the time of talented individuals. I have always had high-powered members of my team spread across multiple time zones. Simply magic while I sleep. They have focused on the various key areas of my business such as finance, marketing, social media management, client engagement and more. For me, it’s best for me to delegate those hats to the experts on my team so I can focus my expertise on specific areas of the business. I have over 100 on my team that work on specific areas of my business daily.

If you are an entrepreneur, there's never going to be enough time in the world to manage. Everyone wants your time, your team, your friends, your family and yourself. Time is scarce, the best you can do is to stack all of this in harmony. Here are some ways to prioritise: - Founders are good at kicking off the task but scaling requires deep expertise, high involvement. Kick off projects, take them to certain level and pass it on the team. - Do regular weekly/daily meetings with your direct reports to avoid any communication gap. - Carve out one hour a day to do what you enjoy the most to avoid burnout. On personal front: - Hard stop at work after certain time - Catchup with your closest friends at least once in 15 days.

You have probably heard that your network is your net worth. People hire people that they know, like, and trust. You must get out and connect with others online and in person. Join communities of like-minded individuals where you can learn and get support. As a SCORE volunteer for over a decade and from personal experience, it may take 3 to 4 years to build your brand so people know your area of expertise and value. You can get free mentoring from SCORE, so take advantage of having feedback from someone not emotionally attached to your business. If you are good at what you do, you don't have competitors; you have colleagues. You may actually get referrals from them, so operate in the spirit of collaborative partnerships. Volunteer!

As an entrepreneur you will have ample of networking opportunities. You will never run out of people to meet or conferences to attend. It is important to develop the depth of the network as compare to the width of the network. Networking looks like reaching out to as many people as you can but networking is also about developing deep relationship with some of them. These are the people who will open doors for you, vouch for you and provide you support across the spectrum. Be genuine while building depth of the network. If you like someone's work, product or personality or philosophy, network with them on that. Find common areas which you both care deeply about and forge bonds around them.

How well do the people in your personal life know about what you do and the value you deliver? Start there.. when you are venturing into entrepreneurship you don’t know where your clients or customers are going to come from but having multipliers (people who can share your message with others) is the fastest way to grow your network. And friends or social acquaintances are great people to practice pitching yourself or your offering so you can continue to refine and get specific and convincing to others. Avoid making assumptions about people and how much they can “do” for you. Talk to as many people as possible formally and informally. But first make sure you know the purpose to why you are networking and what you need so others can help!

I think the two most important new skills to develop are the skills of 1) knowing what you're not good at doing, and 2) delegating those things to someone else.

The best thing about being an entrepreneur is the constant learning that comes with the role. Every month/quarter you will have a new problem at hand, problem which has been never solved before or never thought it in a specific context before. These are your skill building gold mines. As an entrepreneur you will never need to go to an online course to learn new skills. Focus your time on growing the business and the business will propel your personal growth as well. If you want to look beyond your domain, read books on varied topics to develop a strong world view.

When Jeff Bezos was asked in early days of Amazon on what is going to change in e-commerce, he replied 'What will not change in next 10 years?' is a far important question. As an entrepreneur it is important to focus on what will stay the same. This way of thinking about what will not change allows you to have a crystal clear focus on where you wants to innovate. If you know what will not change, you can build an innovation strategy that continues to deliver what customers will definitely want in the future and that's how can be change proof.

By adapt to change, i read this as the smartness and the ahility to pivot and re pivot. This one quality differentiates between successful and not so successful entrepreneurs. Where you start and where you end usually are two extreme ends of your business plan. If you do not recognize and respond accordingky you can never be an entrepreneur.

While teaching entrepreneurship at business schools or building centre for entrepreneurship development at brac business school or even pursuing entrepreneurship interest in finance and pharma sectors I found end to end or inclusive business plan to be most important followed by the scale up plan. Then comes choosing the right investors who would never be impatient.

Pick your investors carefully. Of course the instinct will be to take investment from anyone who is willing to open the check book. But it is very important that entrepreneurs and investors share the same vision and investors are willing to back portfolio companies all the way. Too often that investors drag the entrepreneurs and the company down by making undue demands and creating extreme stress for entrepreneurs.

Don't buy the hype! Entrepreneurship is hard and there are stretches of intense frustration. Everything takes 3x as much time and money as you think, so be prepared for that. The news and social media are full of stories written up after the fact of "Genius entrepreneur raises X $M with blockbuster product", but don't mention the many failures, the luck, the network it took to pull it off. So plan for tough times, and for enough time to find the right idea AND the right people. Staying afloat long enough until good things start happening is how it works.
