What are the best ways to use the GROW model for career development coaching?

The GROW model is an excellent one. I will only add to that, one can include "reflections" as part of the way forward- which is the "W" in the acronym.

A good growth model acknowledges that goals may evolve, and individuals may need to adapt their plans accordingly. I like this method because it's straightforward and easy to implement. Self-identification of goals and the reality allows for a good assessment of the situation, obstacles and options possible, and therefore allowing to structure open questions to navigate the action steps to overcome hurdles or stay motivated.

It's important during the process to acknowledge that there are many paths, and intentionally deciding which is the most appropriate path for you / coachee. Each path may be viable, but you can't pursue all of them in parallel.

In my experience, a short and precise Pre-GROW module, setting the ground to what's to come, can highly increase the success rate of the development process. Then, after setting the Goal, acknowledging where one is (Reality), when most resistance rises, you have the Pre-Grow agreements to fall to, and facilitate the development and growth.

Key elements I found to help while "GROWing" are: - Compassion. To the past me, and to any relaps to the past me. Lifetime's habits tend to sneak back. - Patience. To enjoy the journey, like dancing or listening to a song, and not rush to the last note. - Persistence. Just like weights workouts for physical muscles. One must persist the new actions, set by the GROW process, until the psychological muscles are strong.

If you have a limited mindset, don't believe in your ability to achieve the outcome or are stuck in a headspace where you simply can't see the path to your goal outcomes, the model will likely not be the best place for you to start. Addressing the mindset issues first may be required.

Furthermore, they may not understand all of the options available to them, possible due to organisational communication barriers or a lack of knowledge in the area, and often as the coach may not have expert knowledge or internal insight, the success of the model can only be within the bounds of the individuals perception of the position.
