Avoiding heat sources also means not in direct sunlight and away from windows in general. This also includes placing them away from the direct flow from an air condition cooling vent too! If the instrument employs hazardous gases, liquids or reagents, the instrument should be placed adjacent to a fume hood for safe handling of solids and liquids, and venting of gases through dedicated tubing.

Before bringing chemicals into the lab: 1. Read the SDS (MSDS) 2. Ensure you have the correct storage. 3. Limit access to them; if they need to be kept locked away, be sure you have proper procedures for issuance of keys to responsible persons. 4. Be sure to keep oxidizers and flammables well separated in their own appropriate storage areas. 5. Ensure lab staff are trained to understand the hazards associated with all the chemicals in the lab. 6. if you don't already have one, develop response reaction plans for a) simple spills b) major loss of containment c) fire (chemicals greatly complcate fire precautions and firefighting) d) personal injury.
