What are the best ways to showcase your teaching and mentoring achievements?

In the past year, I've really come to appreciate the differences between telling what I do, and telling folks what they will experience and how they will benefit when working with me. It really helped frame what I do in a way that is useful for prospective clients and collaborators.

Consider the actions of teaching in the lingo of another discipline. For example, writing and assessing outcomes easily translates to project management, including all the milestones (practice exercises, homework, etc.) along the way. If you’re in K-12, you have at least three groups of stakeholders - students, parents, and administrators - who require different kinds of communication. Serving as a curriculum designer and presenting it to others can be paralleled to “leading a team.” Learning new software, learning platforms, etc. - what job doesn’t require technology skills? These are all highly valued items which can translate into a variety of other career fields, once you shed the stereotype of an apple on a desk.

Engage in self-assessment and continually seek feedback to refine your teaching and mentoring skills, emphasizing your commitment to ongoing improvement.

In creating your portfolio, you should follow a structured and targeted approach: ?? Define the purpose of your portfolio and tailor it to your audience. ??? Follow a clear structure, showcasing goals, lesson plans, student work, and relevant documents. ?? Add reflections to each section, explaining the context, decisions made, and lessons learned. ?? Showcase diversity and include various examples to illustrate the breadth of your experiences. ?? Keep it current and regularly update to demonstrate continuous growth and professionalism. ?? Design matters! Pay attention to aesthetics and readability, especially in digital portfolios. ??? Before presenting, seek input to identify blind spots and ensure effectiveness.

An excellent portfolio helps employees to advance their careers since a Portfolio acts like a supporting document for one's CV and cover letter when applying for a position. It increases chances of securing the job since it acts as an identity for job seekers who can also use it to self evaluate from time to time.

Since a resume is like a brand identifier (for each candidate) that sets a potential employee aside or even shows the unique aspects that make the candidate different from others. The resume helps demonstrate the most attractive skills and a set of experiences/ ecs that a candidate posses in relation to other potential candidates.

Using the LinkedIn profile as a repository to quickly update on our activities, while they're still fresh and recent, with accompanying media such as photos can be useful. We can then use our LinkedIn to update our resume later. This way, we reduce the risk of forgetting and overlooking what's already been done.

Update your resume, update your CV. It helps to think in terms of "this could be a line on the resume or the CV" when you're making your "to-do" lists for the day or week. You don't want to overthink this, but neglecting the things you've achieved is actually really bad. You'll forget you have relevant experience for a task or role. You'll forget other people remember you doing something well.

I agree with the suggestion of keeping a portfolio and writing a blog. One should keep the portfolio up-to-date. It may not be possible for everyone to find time to update this during busy teaching schedules. So it will be a good practice to run short polls using online tools after completing each conceptual unit. Students' responses to these poll questions are documents of evidence of your success stories. Keeping teaching journals is also another way of keeping your records up to date.

From my perspective, staying up to date in relation to technologies is also key. Creating a seamless digital, hassle-free experience with digital tools will be appreciated by clients. Also, experiment with the possibilities of AI to e.g. create pictures, logos, layouts and create visuals that directly fit your needs in stead of using standard stock images. It involves a blend of continuous skill and knowledge improvement, extensive networking, and staying updated with the latest research. Furthermore, receiving feedback, engaging in training, and sharing knowledge help educators maintain their effectiveness. Add a short podcast, showcasing your skills. Podcasts are ways for most mentors and teachers to showcase their skill sets. Just a short video where you display what you do and how the students can get involved. This most times not only get you to show how skilled you are but also help you give them a tip of what they will come to experience when registered with you on your platforms.
