I support old pen and paper approach to problems, but when you collaborate with other people on projects for me it was more helpful to present my way of thinking inside an AutoCAD file f.e. You could also snip the notebook version into AutoCAD but I find the other approach more helpful as the people checking it would find it more clear. I use a software to write down what is the element type I calculated and I always make sure that the label of the element is the same as the label in AutoCAD where I showcased my way of thinking. It saves much more time then having to schedule a meeting where you would present how you approched to the problem.
