In my view, Feedback is one of the best initiative . You can show initiative by asking for feedback regularly, listening to constructive criticism, and implementing suggestions. By seeking feedback, you can demonstrate your willingness to learn, grow, and improve as an electrical designer.

My experience tells me that the field of Electrical Engineering is broad. Individuals should select their favorite expertise and prioritize staying updated in that field. I mean choosing the right skill is much more important in this regard.

As a beginner, you should learn the skills by joining workshops, training programs and also should learn important software which are required in your domain. In your learning, join any firm or company to understand the real working procedure.

As a senior electrical designer one way to take initiative in electrical design would be to be proactive. Do a look ahead 2 weeks before deadline, communicate any open items with client/project manager, coordinate with local power company, do code research and lastly understanding what the scope of the project entails of. Intent of design shall be communicated with client and or project manager. By the time I or my teammates begin to work on said project we will have all our information needed to meet said deadline.

In my experience, the best way to show initiative in any engineering design is by adopting Value Engineering approach. Many a times, I have found teams implementing complex systems which rather would have been just a simple and low cost solution. Such solutions should be presented upfront to stakeholders to realize the benefits.

In my opinion, yes, you need “Value Engineering” to determine the ansi protective elements to use in a relay, or the fuse sizing, cable sizing etc. but to simplify your design in the aspect of routing and termination, you need practicality, not engineers. You need to visit the physical world and lay out your design efficiently, make wire harnesses where you can, consolidate terminations, and make assembly, installation, and future troubleshooting as easy as possible.
