What are the best ways to recognize team members for their work in Mining Engineering?

From a recent experience something became clear to me. The current corporate culture is to squeeze every last dollar out of the company to "increase shareholder value", usually at the expense of the people that actually make the company valuable (staff). If you make people truly feel like they can be loyal to a company that is loyal to them they will do anything to continue adding value.

Employee recognitions helps to keep employees motivated, boosts morale, and helps to build a positive workplace culture. By providing positive feedback to your team members, personalize messages and adapt them to specific situations to make them even more meaningful.

Clear goals serve as the North Star guiding our endeavors. By defining the scope, deliverables, timelines, and expectations, we empower our team members to navigate their roles with confidence and purpose. Clarity eliminates ambiguity, fostering a sense of direction and purpose. I can also add that setting goals isn't a one-time event; it's an ongoing dialogue. Regularly monitoring and measuring performance allows us to provide timely feedback and guidance. This not only enhances individual growth but also strengthens the collective fabric of our team.

In my experience, as a leader we oftentimes ‘assume’ our subordinate has the same perspective and/or understanding as that of ours. Hence taking cognizance of this, it is important to ensure that the clarity and realization of the set goals is well understood by your subordinates in their respective, not just in our perspective as a leader.

Feedback is about vision and correcting routes to it. If you don't have a vision for your work/team, feedback turns it into annoying micromanagement.

If the set targets and expectations are unclear, providing feedback—whether it is timely and constructive or not—will be ineffective and demotivating. Instead, it may lead to frustration and annoyance within the team. Also, when providing feedback and suggesting specific actions, it is essential to exercise caution to prevent it from evolving into micromanagement. It is also worth noting that when expectations and goals are well-defined, feedback should be delivered in a manner that encourages the team to engage in self-reflection and devise their own improvement plans and actions.
