Sales is grounded in empathy. Cross-cultural meetings are a chance to stand out, you just need to be more cognisant and respectful of the cultural difference than expected, and you will be remembered and appreciated. So this is a powerful opportunity to grasp. A certain amount of mirroring and respect is required to become trusted enough to partner and work together. So knowing your customer and doing your research is fundamental. Even more so across distance and culture though. To avoid faux pax, show respect, and most powerfully to stand out.

Leverage and include local knowledge from colleagues who work in that location and/or are familiar with the culture. In Asia, a lot of buying decisions are made based on status of the relationship. Be prepared for the long haul if you haven't already invested in building a trusted relationship.

Start with the end in mind. Ask yourself what is the feeling you want the client to have during, and at the end of the meeting? Then, how will I create this feeling. Paying particular notice to how cultural differences or logistical differences in another location may throw you off, and prepare to be nimble. In some places meetings are solemn seated affairs listening quietly, in others people prefer a direct coffee chat, and so on. So prepare and do your research, and factor this into the agenda and structure you want to deliver, to maximise your impact and success.
