What are the best ways for parents to support their child's digital learning at home?

This is a really important topic as we see the growth in digital learning even in the K12 since COVID. I was a higher ed distance ed veteran by the time my middle schooler ended up in online school unexpectedly, and I still struggled at times to help her. This is a great place to start. The internet connection and dependable device are absolutely KEY to help reduce their stress levels and allow them to focus on learning and completing their work. These things can be expensive, but there are also often programs in place to provide technology assistance. And that "clean, well-lighted place" Hemingway talked about goes a long way too - a dedicated space for learning that is clean, comfortable, and welcoming also helps them settle in and focus.

Be aware of the goals, help to reduce the friction of engaging in the behavior and recognise when the task has been completed effectively. Engage with you child, try to understand the aspects they like of the process and those that could be improved.

Establishing a designated learning space free from distractions. Setting a consistent schedule for online classes and study sessions. Monitoring screen time and promoting breaks for physical activity. Engaging with their child's learning materials and assignments. Encouraging curiosity and exploration of online resources. Communicating regularly with teachers to stay informed about their child's progress. Providing emotional support and encouragement during challenging tasks. Modeling positive digital habits and responsible use of technology. By creating a supportive and structured learning environment, parents can help their child succeed in digital learning at home.

I would go a step farther and say the most important thing is to encourage them and teach them how to best communicate with their teachers and school. Many students in this generation are reluctant to "bother" their teachers with questions, or are nervous about asking someone they've never physically met, or are worried that teachers/instructors will judge them for needing extra help. Helping them understand that their instructor is there to help them, wants them to succeed, and that answering questions is literally part of the job is one of the best things you can do for them. Helping them learn how to communicate in ways that are direct, respectful, and clear/easy to understand will get them better results and leave the teacher grateful.

Be aware of your child's progress and try to foster an environment of encouragement and support instead of pressure and criticism. Engage in the progress but allow for your child to build learning autonomy. It sound like a balancing act and it is. Where can you support more and where can you take a step back to allow your child to figure it out for themselves. Hopefully, the teacher/tutor/coach of your child will help you find this balance and give you more information on when certain things are needed from you as a parent.

For all of the (very valid) concerns about the constant connectedness, screen time, overuse of devices, etc. affecting children and young adults, this is a case where we can turn those things around and use them for good. Games like Among Us and Minecraft, Apple Facetime and its equivalents, and safe and structured in-person activities go a long way towards keeping your child from feeling disconnected or isolated.

Social interaction is critical to the development of your child. Encouragement and access is key. I'm a huge advocate for sport as a tool for socialising and skill development but there are many ways.

Foster open communication with your child about their digital learning experience. Check in on how they are managing their workload. Ask them if they are understanding the content. Discuss how they are handling challenges. Encourage them to express their concerns and share their achievements. It's also beneficial to teach them the importance of taking breaks to prevent burnout. Open communication helps you better understand your child's needs and support their well-being.
