An ORM framework that solves the impedance mismatch problem at the expense of exposing an intrusive and complex programming model nullifies the advantages offered by using the solution. An ORM should not clutter the source code by requiring mapping annotations to be specified in many different source files of the object model classes of an application. An ORM should give full flexibility in object modeling. It should support class-hierarchies, associations and aggregations. It should support one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many relationships.

2 Performance issues

Data access is typically the most time-consuming operation. Choose an ORM that minimizes the number of database trips (no n+1 problems) when retrieving lists of complex objects involving 1-1, 1-many, and many-many relationships. It should support deep/shallow operations, lazy fetches, and persistence-by-reachability. Also, to provide optimal performance, a good ORM should use database prepared statements where possible, use connection pools, allow bulk operations, and provides object caching. The more automatic and implicit these operations are, the easier the product would be to use.

3 Security risks

A third limitation of ORM is the security risks that can stem from the dynamic nature and the lack of validation of the ORM queries. ORM frameworks can enable developers to write queries using parameters, variables, or expressions that are not checked or sanitized by the database engine. This can expose the application to SQL injection attacks, where malicious users can inject SQL commands into the queries and manipulate or compromise the data. A good ORM should expose a small number of simple and consistent APIs. An API bloat can otherwise make the product confusing and harder to use. Small number of APIs also helps in maintaining backward compatibility. To simplify the understanding and usage of the product, an ORM should provide extensive documentation with comprehensive user manuals, detailed explanations of APIs, plenty of ready-to-run example programs, and tutorials. A right ORM can further flatten the learning curve by not encumbering the design, coding, build, and deployment processes with many logistics operations and additional steps.

5 Maintenance challenges

A fifth limitation of ORM is the maintenance challenges that can result from the dependency and the complexity of the ORM framework. An ORM should not make the developer jump through many hoops just to be able to use the product. It should avoid adding steps like preprocessing, source code generation, and compilations. An ORM should minimize using the number of additional files/libraries. It should have minimal dependencies on different software packages and their evolving versions to avoid "dependency hell".
