What are the best ways to overcome obstacles to getting a promotion?

Identifying your value proposition comes from tracking EVERYTHING. When you first set out to earn a promotion, identify benchmarks that you want/need to hit along the way. Then, track your progress. Track your achievements. Track your impact (customers gained, money saved, processes improved, etc.). When you sit down to ask for a promotion or interview for one, you're more likely to receive it if you have clear data to prove your worth. Walk the walk, don't just talk the talk.

The key part here is once you’ve identified the value you add, is understanding who within your organization sees that value, and can assist in your promotion. A bright shining star is not see if covered by the moon. Focus on making sure you have visibility to the right parties: lateral piers, VP’s, or relevant leadership who can help vouch come the time for a promotional ask.

I would recommend getting guidance from someone you trust. I find the best place to get career advice can be from past managers that you used to work for and that you trust. Sometimes when it is an internal promotion you are seeking you can get support from your existing manager. I find big career decisions are best to run across several people, including peers you trust at your company or former coworkers who work in similar industries and would understand the stakes.

The key here is to make sure you see feedback from those you trust, and from those who are able to give you accurate feedback. When you narrow the list down, your organization may have very few people who can give you unbiased feedback as well be able to observe you to provide the feedback in the first place.

Expanding your network is an ongoing job. It's not about who you know but who knows what you can do. This isn't to say you should start collecting contacts like trophies. Imagine your network as a sturdy ladder extending beyond your department walls. Each rung represents a connection, and ascending requires actively showcasing your expertise while building active relationships along the way. Volunteer for challenging projects, share insightful ideas, get to know the people in your network and their skills, and let your leadership shine. Pay close attention to who champions your success and do the same for them. It's not about accumulating acquaintances; it's about cultivating relationships built on mutual respect and appreciation.

Stock, Commission, Bonus Plans, and other forms of compensation can be key levers in order to receive pay where salary bands may limit opportunity.
