What are the best ways to monitor your IT outsourcing service provider's performance?

Strategically, outsourcing is a lever to optimise costs, time to market etc. in relatively less significant areas of value chain, in majority of the cases. Measuring this contribution (cost saving, reducing TTM) by vendor should be good enough. On top of that you may expect vendor to optimise it further through continual improvements. Mature vendors will demonstrate their performance using metrics, use it to gain more insights but don't digress from the goal: why did you outsource in the first place.

One of the challenges with many outsourcing agreements is a slew of metrics that, by themselves, do not add much value. To get to value, I worked with our strategic partner to create what I referred to as a KPI tree. At the top level, the KPI supports strategic goal e.g. Environmental Impact or Cost Optimization. Each metric is then mapped and placed within the tree. If a metric does not support any of the high level KPI's, we remove them from the contract. In this way, we were able to determine which metrics are meaningful and ensure that we focus on the right aspects of the agreement.
