What are the best ways to measure the impact of your organization's grant writing efforts?

Grant writing is only as good as the mission, theory of change, strategic plan, and goals set by the organization and how they are operationalized in programming and implementation. You shouldn't be setting new goals. These items listed in all of these responses should.be identified before you start writing. Grant writing is about explaining to funder what these items are in context to the community you serve, in alignment with that funders funding focus. The measurement of your grantwriting impact is how well it conveys a clear narrative, how well funders are educated about your organization and community by it, and how many dollars are received by it.

A logic model should be in place to facilitate writing. If you aim to combat poverty through affordable housing, here's an ex: Impact: What is the ultimate, measurable change? Secure affordable housing options for a diverse range of low-income individuals, thereby contributing to a notable decrease in the local poverty rate. Outcomes: What are the measurable short-term changes indicating progress? Increase in disposable income for families, leading to fewer concerns about food security. Outputs: What are the immediate, tangible results? Successfully leasing 25 apartments to underserved individuals. Activities: What are the key actions taken? Enrolling participants in housing program via a transparent & accessible process.

If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. I see a lot of nonprofits scrambling to collect data for final reports at the end of the grant. If you establish and track KPIs from the beginning, you will have better data and much less stress!

Achievability injects a healthy dose of realism into impact goals. While ambition is commendable, goals must be within the realm of possibility to maintain credibility and ensure practical progress. Relevance, underscores the importance of aligning impact goals with the broader context and needs of the community or sector addressed by the project. It ensures that efforts are directed towards outcomes that truly matter. By establishing clear timelines, one not only provides a framework for implementation but also enhances the project's overall effectiveness. This temporal dimension aids in pacing activities, anticipating challenges, and fostering a sense of momentum.

Impact goals are important in the grant making process, especially if the grant proposal is for one that is scientific and based off of results. You would have to state what scientific indicators you want to achieve, and what means of measurements you would use to get that data. Being data-oriented and making sure your data is quantifiable is key.

Choosing the right data collection method is pivotal for robust impact measurement. Surveys offer broad insights but demand careful crafting. Interviews provide depth but may be resource-intensive. Focus groups allow dynamic discussions but may influence responses. Observations capture real-time behaviors but require standardization. Case studies provide context but may lack generalizability.
