The McKinsey 7-Step Problem-Solving Process is a robust methodology integral to consulting. It begins with problem definition, ensuring a clear understanding of the issue. Next, consultants conduct extensive research, gathering relevant data for informed decision-making. Hypotheses are developed to structure the analysis, followed by rigorous testing. Findings are then synthesized, leading to concrete recommendations. Implementation plans are crafted, and feedback mechanisms ensure ongoing refinement. It starts with your motivations. What is your goal? Intrinsic motivation stems from autonomy, information and connections. Identify your motivators and learn how to optimise or increase them. Next step is your daily routines. There are only so many hours in the day and we need to find ways to optimise for our productive time. There are multiple tools and methods you can use to concentrate on what’s really important. You can be like Santa and make a list, check them twice, or you can use your favourite mobile app or your laptop. Identify and overcome the challanges and try to spend some time outside of your comfort zone.

Our mindset determines the lens through which we see everything else in life. From an inward perspective, this lens is narrowly focused on ourselves; from an outward perspective, this lens is broadened to include others. Having the right mindset can help you achieve success. There are two different mindsets that people often use- the inward mindset and the outward mindset. Be open to develop a new mindset and get outside of your bubble. With an inward mindset, individuals tend to think only about their needs, challenges, and objectives relative to a given problem. They can be very focused and driven, but this focus can also lead to tunnel vision. With an outward mindset, individuals instead focus on collective results.

As a management consultant, you can learn from others by comprehensively analyzing available data and applying industry best practices. This involves gathering relevant information across the sector, examining it closely, and reviewing proven strategies that have been successful in similar situations as your clients. By tailoring solutions to specific needs, you can show your clients how to improve their performance, enhance customer satisfaction, and achieve their objectives more efficiently.

Marshall Goldsmith, perhaps the best-known executive coach in the U.S., wrote a book called What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. It’s a wonderful title because the idea is so true. We all have a set of capabilities and responses that may serve us well as mid-level employees but that won’t help us as more senior leaders. Those managers who still mostly just putting their heads down and getting the work done — they haven’t learned to bring their team together and ensure they were all working in sync toward the highest-priority goals.Usually a complex program is required for such clients, most probably a full leadership transition package including coaching, business consulting and mentoring.

Having mental models and frameworks that work is always helpful. We need to also acknowledge that the world is constantly evolving and staying up to date is challenging. Supplementing what we do at work with other forms of information to deepen domain knowledge will allow us to form an opinion of what is to come, allowing us to anticipate change and prepare for it. Being able to solve for future disruptions could then be a huge game changer down the line.

Have a few tools that you feel comfortable using. You learn a tool while using it. In my opinion it's better to use a few tools correctly and confidently, than to know a lot of tools with no practical experience in using them. You will always find new and interesting methods, which you can try and add to your toolset. Of course it is important to use a right tool for the specific purpose, too.

Leaders can dramatically limit their effectiveness by only being willing to build strong relationships with certain kinds of people. And all too often, that means people like themselves — in background, culture, race, gender, beliefs, or work style. See and question the limiting assumptions you make about people who aren’t like you, and by offering you tools to support you in understanding and creating strong and vital working relationships with a wider variety of people.
