What are the best ways to manage a nonprofit team?

The success of a nonprofit is built on relationships, community and nonprofit leadership, transparency, integrity, partnerships, and producing quantifiable outcomes. I have managed a non-profit for many, many years, and I serve on many nonprofit boards...I know these facts to be true!

Creating an environment where team members feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and concerns is pivotal for nurturing a healthy and productive workplace culture. To achieve this, it is essential to be approachable and accessible to your team, fostering an open-door policy where team members can freely share their ideas, feedback, or concerns without fearing judgment or repercussions. Cultivating a culture of respect and empathy within the team is equally important. Encourage mutual respect among team members and underscore the significance of comprehending each other's perspectives, experiences, and challenges.

Effective communication is crucial for nonprofit organizations to ensure team alignment, stakeholder engagement, and mission fulfillment. 1. Regular Updates on Goals and Strategies: Set a cadence for updating the team on organizational objectives, project timelines, and strategies. This helps in setting clear expectations and allows team members to align their efforts cohesively. 2. Transparency: Share successes and challenges alike. Being transparent fosters trust and shows that the organization values openness and honesty. 3. Two-Way Communication: Encourage team members to voice their opinions, share feedback, or ask questions. Platforms for such exchanges can be regular team meetings, one-on-ones, or anonymous suggestion boxes.

Learn to cross-talk -- be aware of what the whole of the team is doing to build relations and contacts. Work hard to positively manage up; this keeps one out of the line of fire and allows one to focus on their activities. Take risk – feel empowered to work with your mandates – don’t ask why I can’t do this, but where does the mandate say we can’t. Develop a culture of a positive work environment – if you’re not clear, don’t keep your question to yourself. Don’t look left/right – inherently trust working partners, co-workers (but it is a lot of work, share, share, share). Work to live, don’t live to work – place your family and personal life first – it is what matters. It is OK to make mistake – this is not a zero defect environment.

I agree! Communication is key to keeping your team vested and loyal to your mission. Transparency helps with trust even when it may not shed the best light but at least you were open and honest.

Creating a positive work environment that nurtures collaboration, growth, and trust is key to effective leadership and building a strong and effective team. Recognizing each team member's wins, whether big or small, both privately and publicly, fuels their drive to Do Great Things. At CECI, we showcase the wins of our team members on our social media channels. This simple act has a ripple effect on the team. It boosts morale and a sense of pride and creates an atmosphere of mutual support as staff celebrate each other's wins, enhancing collaboration and productivity. It helped us inspire our team to do great things, attract new talents who value our supportive work culture, and boost our reputation as a nonprofit that cares about its team.

It is important to model the qualities you expect from your team. The key is hiring the right team, with the preferred mindset and preferred perspective of the vision and mission of the nonprofit. Organizations spend a lot of time changing internal mindset and perspective instead of advancing the mission. When you hire with the preferred mindset and perspective in mind, advancing the mission becomes the collective goal.

Letting team members know that they are appreciated. Do not act like they are your employees who getting paid. Show your appreciation and support them. Allow them to help with their ideas and take them under consideration. and implement them if good ideas. Have volunteer of the month with certificates. It's a inexpensive way to show your appreciation for them and creates competition amongst them

Drawing from my experience as a former CEO, it is evident that collective motivation and the absence of aimless, negative, and neutral personnel are pivotal factors for effectiveness.Furthermore Effective nonprofit management requires a holistic approach that considers mission, strategy, governance, and the well-being of your team. Continual learning and adaptation are key as the nonprofit landscape evolves. Additionally, consulting with experienced nonprofit professionals and seeking mentorship can be invaluable for honing your skills as a nonprofit leader.

Non-profit organizations are successful when leadership empowers and supports their team to accomplish the vision and mission of the non-profit. Usually, non-profits have a specific objective that improves society in a meaningful way, so opportunities are constantly present for every staff member to use their skills, talents, knowledge, time, and attention to participate in the process of creating positive impact. When organizational culture espouses transparency, trust, and achievement to create positive impact, egos are set aside as impediments to the organization's collective success. If leadership embodies selfless actions that empower and support team members in their work toward bettering the world, positive impact follows rapidly.

Nonprofit teams, both large and small, are uniquely susceptible to becoming siloed, burning out, and losing sight of the impact we strive to have. Nevertheless, nonprofit staff generally love their mission and the job (or 5) that they do. The best way to connect the love for the work and mission is to show the through-line of how day-to-day activities affect the 1/3/5/50 year vision of the org. Investing time upfront in collaborative and data-informed strategic planning underscores the value of each department, team, person, and output and outcomes to the impact our organizations aspire for.

In the book "Good to Great," Jim Collins says that leading a team requires three things: We have to build the bus well, get the right people on the bus, and have those people be in the right seats. When we're thinking about aligning our team with our mission, we need to consider, first, whether we have a story that's worth telling. If we don't think we're improving our stakeholders' lives, then we can't ask our team to fall into line behind us. We need to tell a better story or find a different one. That's building the bus. The next two components are just as important. Are we getting people on our bus who can live the story we're trying to tell? And if we are, are they serving that story in roles that match their gifts and capabilities?

Aligning team members with the mission of your non-profit organization begins during the hiring process. Leadership and Human Resources staff need to work together to identify components of the potential employees' work history, personal experiences related to the organization's mission, and unique motivation for seeking the position. As interviews occur with the applicant, leadership needs to intentionally mine their interview conversations for insights into how the applicant can fit into the team and what knowledge and skill sets they possess which will directly augment the team capability at the outset. This process can alert to any red flags as well as prepare the applicant for an onboarding that is timely, empowering, and cohesive.

It's important to invest in your staff with respect to professional development. Much learning happens with online courses, webinars, and conferences, and those can be costly, but can pay dividends. Many organizations will have a "per head" budget for general professional development, and a larger fund for larger costs (like conferences) that individuals can be recommended to or apply to.

Societal change happens today with unprecedented speed. For non-profit organizations, sustained survival requires leadership and staff to be aware of societal changes and how they affect their mission and vision. By creating and sustaining a culture of innovation and rapid learning fused with a foundational awareness of the history of their field, staff can successfully navigate troubling emotions of fear, uncertainty, and impermanence. They can gain confidence and invest their enlivened excitement into creating lasting impact by pairing new concepts with the unchanging elements of their field. This balance creates achievement, success, and the longevity that builds brand consistency regardless of societal shifts and transient trends.

In my experience, cross train, constant development and knowledge sharing are huge motivators for growth and self sufficiency in a team member. Do not foster silo cultures as in this is my job and that’s not my job. Encourage everyone to know how to perform several tasks and understand how they all connect to the organization. That way decisions made can be inclusive of all that are involved or affected.

Diversity in fundraising is critical. Don't rely on one funder as funder priorities often change - abruptly! You need to have both diversity and redundancy in place to weather the bad times and take advantage of the good.

One thing I've found really helpful is managing resources as though you won't get more, save for budget areas that are highly unpredictable and have to vary too often. A good way of doing that is by entrusting and demonstrating confidence with each department or project head and communicating effectively on the resources allocated and available, then working on ways of maximizing the outcomes using those limited inputs. Always ensure you administer the right tools of work to track the utility of resources.

All the well-being practices in the world will not replace good pay and benefits. Especially for workers now coming into the nonprofit workforce.

Lead with empathy. In Nonprofits, because people are often working in a field they are deeply passionate about, there can be an unhealthy blur between professional and personal lives with people working too much and not taking the time off they need to be effective. Lead by example by not sending emails on weekends (set the delay delivery option for Monday morning if you do!), encouraging people to take time off and disconnect, and offering them support, so they feel empowered and reassured to leave their work for a break. Regular check-ins across the team on everyone's wellbeing is critical - including the you as the leader. Lead with empathy and your team will emulate it to their staff.

In the current world, there are quite many external factors that affect how people work and their effectiveness. The organization's culture has a very key role in influencing the employee's well-being. There are cultures that favor some traits of people, while others may be disfavoring. Adopting an organizational culture from a feedback point is most efficient. This suggests that conducting surveys with your staff first before adopting a certain culture is, is more beneficial than vice versa. This can save the organization a good amount of resources. It is the culture of an organization that makes the work environment either conducive or toxic; this can affect the employees' well-being & performance positively or negatively respectively.

It is very easy to understaff an organization in an effort to make sure the most money goes to the cause. However, this is a pathway to burned out staff. A good nonprofit will not only manage the existing resources through good engagement, but make sure that the organization is staffed in a way to do the things it needs to without abusing staff's time and capacity.

Non-profit teams need to be fully aligned on the purpose of the organization. Recruiting the right people is key and needs to focus on their mindset rather than their skills. The highest skilled people will end up sabotaging your efforts if they are profit-oriented (be that in terms of money or prestige) as they will not view their contribution through the lens of impact. Make sure the team is first and foremost impact-driven. The money that you need to run the organization will follow. But if you build a team of people who are predominantly focused on themselves and what THEY can get out of that job, you will consistently keep missing out on opportunities to fulfill your mission.
