You don't need to spend a fortune on a microphone, but you should look for one that suits your style, genre, and budget. For example, if you are recording vocals, you might want to use a condenser microphone that can pick up the details and subtleties of your voice. If you are recording instruments, you might want to use a dynamic microphone that can handle high sound pressure levels and reject unwanted background noise.
If you're looking for a "lively" sound, that probably means including some of the sound of the room that you're recording in - capturing the reflections of the different surfaces of the walls, floor, ceiling and objects in the room. If so, a condenser microphone such as an AKG 414 or similar model will help with that. Liveliness could also be referring to "hifi" frequencies (e.g around 10k and up), in which case you would want to use a microphone that has a good response in those high frequencies.
Another way to make your recordings sound more lively is to experiment with different placements of your microphone, your source, and your room. The placement of your microphone can affect the balance, tone, and clarity of your sound, as well as the amount of reverb, ambience, and room noise that you capture. Like any processor, enough is enough. Don't over compress the sound. Set the ratio so that there's just enough to take the spikes out of the volume so that the listener doesn't receive an unwelcomed surprise. Otherwise let the the recording feel natural. Other processing like reverb, delay, autotune have their places as well but in moderation. Don't let your sound sound synthesized. Let it sound fresh !

However, if you use EQ too much or too randomly, you can also make your sound too harsh, muddy, or thin. To use EQ strategically, you need to identify the problem areas and the sweet spots of your sound, and use the appropriate filters and curves to enhance or reduce them. You also need to consider the context and the role of your sound in the mix, and use EQ to create some separation, contrast, or harmony with other sounds. For example, if you want to make your sound more bright and clear, you can use a high-shelf filter to boost the high frequencies. If you want to make your sound more warm and full, you can use a low-shelf filter to boost the low frequencies.
Reverb and delay are two common effects that can help you create some ambience, depth, and space in your sound. However, if you use reverb and delay too much or too carelessly, you can also make your sound too washed out, cluttered, or distant. To use reverb and delay sparingly, you need to choose the right type, size, and amount of reverb and delay for your sound, and use the appropriate settings and controls to fine-tune them. You also need to use some techniques such as EQ, compression, or sidechain to avoid some issues such as muddiness, feedback, or masking. For example, if you want to make your sound more spacious and lush, you can use a large hall reverb with a long decay and a low mix. If you want to make your sound more rhythmic and catchy, you can use a ping-pong delay with a short feedback and a high mix.
RECORDING LIVE INSTRUMENTS. Recording live instruments can bring numerous benefits to the process of making a recording, enhancing its liveliness and authenticity in several ways: Organic Sound: Live instruments capture the natural nuances and imperfections of a performance, adding a human touch to the recording. This authenticity can make the music feel more alive and relatable to listeners. Dynamic Range: Live recordings often have a wider dynamic range compared to synthesized or programmed sounds. This means that softer passages can be truly delicate, and louder sections can be more powerful and impactful, resulting in a more dynamic and engaging listening experience.
I would try and record the band live. Sometimes it comes down to your attitude as well, make sure you are feeling good about what you are doing. Conversations will make the difference in a studio setting. Try and get it in a take or two, be prepared and willing to let go. The mics, mic placement, eq, processors, all of it factors in. But the performance still needs to be there. I've recorded the same song four different times and ways, just to exhaust my options for presentation. You have to be happy, so work it until you are!! Also, trust the people you work with. They will know too.
When dealing with mostly electronic based songs, add some live elements like percussion or handclaps recorded live throughout the song, not looped. When recording claps it's also cool to get some room noise in there as well.
To liven it up, you have a lot of choices. Think of 'contrast' and add some. 2. Add a couple of percussion layers at a low volume. 3. Add an instrumental fill or perhaps a shriek at strategic spots. 4. Perhaps thin it out here and there as a contrast measure, perhaps the top and bottom voice only? 5.
