What are the best ways to learn from failure in sales?

You can't fail unless you've tried: that in it's own is a type of success. Simple tips to help lead to tomorrow's success: 1) Review your process with a trusted mentor. 2) Tell them what you feel would have made the difference, i.e. more preparation, better listening, etc. 3) Be prepared for constructive criticism - you've asked how did I not succeed, so open yourself to their input. I did this years ago when a Rep was complaining about the lack of support from previous managers. 3 questions turned it around. 1) What have you done to change that? 2) Is this person the ONLY one in the org with answers? 3) Did you fail you? Failure is how we grow. Lean into new processes, fail fast, review and improve.

There is no method of learning that is better than learning from our own experiences. Throughout my sales career, I've always contacted buyers when I've lost a sale to learn the reason(s). The feedback I've received has helped me tremendously. While some people with low self esteem can't handle feedback, I am excited to get feedback. Equally helpful is to ask the buyers who chose you why they chose you.

I agree with this statement, however it is also worth seeking feedback from the client you lost the sale to. Why? What alternatives where missed when uncovering the buying influence? Key to moving forward and ensuring success on the next one.

Agreed, it is always helpful to share with others as their feedback may surprise you. In some cases your approach/process may be "right" just not "right" for the specific prospect you were speaking with at the time. Feedback will help you learn how to pivot in the moment and you may learn some hints the prospect was giving which were not picked up on at the time.
