They have done this with almost every product they make. That’s how you gain unparalleled consumer knowledge. Now use that knowledge to fill unmet needs. Or you can do the easy way. Reddit. Also, twitter. Read customer complaints and reverse engineer them into features…

Problems, problems, problems. What problems do potential buyers have? When a current customer or prospect asks for a feature, ask "Why?". What problem does that feature solve? We all have a tendency to jump to solutions, but if we take the time to define the problem we often create better solutions and it's easier to see how prevalent that problem is in the market.

Ask lifestyle questions. Then. Actually listen to what they have to say, instead of looking for a way to dive into a canned pitch. Listen, then address their stated needs.

Many times we don't ask the right questions and way to often we don't listen. Listening is probably the best way to success here.

Consumer electronics including mobile phones have faced a lot of plateauing in the past decade. What a Nokia a digital camera and a mp3 player and multiple categories could do a simple 100$ android smart phone can do. So to look at reality. From phones to tvs. And consumer reviews online. There’s not much you can do as we used to back in the early part of the first decade like early 2000s. Design element sticks now. Brands like Dyson has shown us the way. This time I disagree with George. When it comes to TVs, Washing Machines, Smartphones or whatever you can think of, the portfolio in the relevant channels, at least in Europe, are equal. Differentiation can mainly be found in manufacturing quality of cheaper copycats sold in discount-stores or cheap online channels.
