What are the best ways to get started in a public speaking career?

Speak from the heart, be genuine, passionate and true. Be yourself and do it because you want to educate, engage, motivate and inspire ??

The #1 way to get started as a speaker is to see it, claim it, and be it. Just do it. I coach my speakers at our speakers bureau to take action steps today. Not to wait until you switch careers, or have time. First, create a great bio and speaker photo and capture photos of yourself on stage which means you’ve got to start sharing your story and wisdom on stage. Second, write this on your bathroom mirror to remember the one true key to success - be authentic. When I speak at Universities on the power of words, and delivering award winning business presentations, it’s always about authenticity. People today are real. Be real in whatever you deliver on stage.

My biggest tip is to make ANY presentation about THEM (your audience), not YOU. It doesn't mean you can't feature in some way - but the lesson/learning/message needs to have direct pertinence, relevance and impact on the audience.

Purpose can be a very introspective idea for most to identify with much less use as the anchor for becoming a speaker. I would start before that and simply tell your story, share an experience that you've learned from that others would resonate with. Share your fears and insecurities because it will humanise you and make you more relatable to an audience. Talk about your dreams, ambitions and goals and how you'll get there even if you don't have all the answers.

One technique that I’ve more recently realized that I use to develop my public speaking skills is by responding to various scenarios out loud during time to myself. While this may sound weird, it works! For example, as a professional, you may be asked for your perspective on a specific topic from time to time. Think of what a topic could be that your boss, colleague, or peer may ask you to weigh in on. Practicing your response to that question on the car ride home, in the mirror before bed will help you get comfortable on that particular topic, and you’ll appear well versed when asked for your perspective. Repeating this practice for various scenarios has helped me get more comfortable speaking on topics with confidence!

When I first started speaking, I read Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins. It is a scary book to read when you are a 6-foot-tall woman... how huge might I actually become? Regardless, I pressed on, and this paragraph jumped out: "I became an excellent public speaker because, rather than once a week, I booked myself to speak three times a day to anyone who would listen. Within a month, I’d have two years of experience. And within a year, I’d have a decade’s worth of growth." I immediately took this advice to heart and spoke anywhere and everywhere! I remember a person calling and asking if I could show up that very evening for a keynote. Yes, absolutely! The best way to get started in a public speaking career is simply to speak!

When you've found your WHY, your niche, and you know what your key message is, it's time to look at the HOW: your delivery style, pitch, pace and tone are so important. Practice with different versions of your talk, and work out which anecdotes best fit the key message you want to deliver so that you have relatable examples to share. The other imperative piece to look at is guidelines in relation to your topic. For example, in my area of expertise I focus on providing information in a safe and appropriate non-triggering way that adheres to media guidelines around mental health and mental illness. Sharing your story is one thing, and doing it in an appropriate way is how you elevate it while providing appropriate and valuable content.

Step #1 : Find your passion It took me quite a while to understand that people are not paid for their phenomenal public speaking skills, but for the value they bring to the audience through speaking. Although, good speakers can speak about a variety of topics, the most sought-after speakers always have a passion for a particular topic/subject. As a speaker, their passion is their identity. It is difficult to get paid for speaking about a topic that doesn’t make your heart sing. So, before you get on this journey, ask yourself, “what am I passionate about?” Is it Entrepreneurship, Personal branding, Freelancing, Personal growth, Customer service, Women empowerment or anything else? It is different for different people. What is it for you?

Um nicho, quanto mais específico melhor, pois lhe dará a oportunidade de se aprofundar e tornar-se referência nele. Porém também é importante entender o tamanho desse nicho e o quanto de problemas você consegue resolver nele.

Si quieres destacar especialízate. Si quieres hablar de todo, primero de liderazgo, al poco tiempo de sostenibilidad y despues de IA porque esta de moda... ...lo siento amigo pero te habrás covertido en un "todólogo" o en un "cu?ao pedante" y perderás toda tu credibilidad. Documenting your journey and achievements holds significance, as it allows others to recognize your worth and become attracted to what you offer. Putting yourself out there is a form of pitching for speaking opportunities. Always be ready to present your best self to the public because your work acts as your voice, even in rooms where you may not physically be present.

Record every time you speak. Firstly, to review yourself and see what went well and what to improve. Watching yourself back is very challenging at first but an essential part of improving your skills. Secondly, to have marketing pieces. If someone is going to hire you to speak, they need to see evidence of you speaking.

?Te sientes identificado con el evento, alineado con sus valores, estás cómodo con el resto de ponentes, hablarás para tu público objetivo…? Son varias las preguntas que has de responderte antes de aceptar hablar en un foro. No te dejes llevar por la remuneración económica ni te enga?es pensando en que es un gran escaparate. Muchas veces los macroeventos restan mas que suman. Sé coherente con tu marca personal.

Convierte tus conferencias en una maquinaria de generar más conferenecias e ingresos. ?Cómo hacerlo? Há um ditado que diz: N?o basta ser, precisa parecer ser. Portanto é importante você mostrar o que já conquistou, pois gera prova social.

Best way to market yourself is by “reintroducing” yourself to your current network. Your current network includes people: -on your phone you can text -you can email -in your community -on LinkedIn -like your colleagues -in your alumni network -etc. Reach out to them. Let them know they you’re speaking and the topics you speak on. Ask if there’s anyone they know you should connect with. Ask for introductions. You’d be surprised how helpful this is especially when you’re beginning. Most people do social media announcements but not personal announcements. Why? Because it can be vulnerable to ask your network for support. But that’s what they’re there for. Reintroduce yourself to the people who know you best!

Building a personal brand on LinkedIn helped me get started with marketing myself as a speaker. I can see that creating content around your niche gets you speaking gigs from institutes, conferences and companies. Creating content around your niche is a brilliant way to market yourself.

Network, network, and then network some more. Networking in relevant industries and with other public speakers will not just open up speaking opportunities, but also give you the chance to learn from other people's experiences (other speakers) or needs (relevant industries for your niche).

I set a goal of public speaking by taking a Dale Carnegie Course. From there I joined Toastmasters. There are many ways to market yourself through public speaking: Offer to speak at various clubs i.e. Rotary, Soroptimists clubs etc., do interviews on Facebook, join podcasts forums & offer to speak. Offer to speak to Meetup groups. Check out radio interview opportunities. In creating your own events be sure to market them through win-win partnerships-Ex: gyms & health products, real estate agents & home stager. Be sure to keep presentations short & succinct & have a follow up opportunity such as: Pass around a clipboard and have them sign up for a newsletter. Or announce a follow up class & give attendees an incentive to atted.

It's easy to have the idea that if you are an outstanding speaker, with a needed message, you'll be booked frequently. I now see, 13 years into this journey, that marketing yourself is still something the top speakers do daily. You can't sit around waiting to be asked to speak - get out there.

Empiezas a ser conocido como conferenciante, ?y ahora qué? Muchos conferenciantes creen que dar 2 o 4 conferencias al mes ya está muy bien, eso son de 24 a 48 al o?o. Los conferenciantes TOP dan entre 200 y 400 al a?o y a unos cachés mucho más altos que los principiantes. ?Hasta dónde quieres hecer crecer tu carrera? ?De cada conferencia que das te salen otras 3 por recomendaciones de los asistentes a sus empresas o sus amigos? Si no pasa eso y quieres crecer, necesitas mejorar tu conferencia formándote en hablar en público. Además debes trabajar tu marca personal y tu presencia en RRSS y ser visible para los que contratan. Puedes hacerlo solo o apoyarte en una agencia especializada como Helpers Speakers. Y ya conoces el proverbio...

Escribe un libro. No te vas a enriquecer con ello a nivel monetario pero, desde luego, sí va a suponer un enriquecimiento a nivel personal. Sin un libro no eres nadie.

CREATE A DEMAND FOR YOUR MESSAGE! The number one way to land paid speaking gigs is to already be on someone’s radar. Almost 100% of paid events already have someone in mind for their keynote slot. They may be looking to fill other slots, but the money is made by having a message that there is an existing demand for!

I think networking is beneficial. For example, join a business networking club and connect with people. Tell them what you are doing and what opportunities you are looking for. Perhaps someone needs an expert in your field. Also ask family and friends, colleagues or anyone you know if they know anyone who could benefit from your services.

Seth Godin once said that to gain more confidence for your public speaking get going by practicing out loud and starting small - start with speaking to your dog, then a small group, then a larger group and only then, tackle your ideal audience.

Joining Toastmasters is the easiest and best ways to learn public speaking. The weekly meetings are designed to give you both speaking and listening experiences, within a supportive atmosphere. Learn the basics, practise regularly, then go on to speak better on your passion or discover your niche yourself. Rotary International has weekly meetings where they invite speakers, so that is one avenue. Join professional organisations to network and learn more and pick opportunities to speak.

1. Figure out your niche. You can’t be the kitchen sink and think you will talk in everything. Folks want an expert. 2. Do a lot of speaking for free, you have to figure out how you will talk, what your cadence will be, are you the funny speaker, the motivational speaker, the serious speaker, you have to decide and figure out what type of speaker you’ll be. But you only can do that through actually speaking. 3. Watch videos of yourself speaking to see if you do a lot of vocal pauses such as um, like, ok, right. Treat this as learning a new skill to be really good at it.

People will remember how you made them feel as much as what you had to say. Anecdotes are gold. Speaking is like jumping of a metaphorical cliff...the more you do it, the easier the leap.

Just get talking. Get experience at any level, record yourself, watch the recording and notice your physical movements and delivery, ask for feedback from audience members, apply what you've learnt, and experiment as much as possible. Fail, learn, repeat.
