Mentors and sponsors are absolutely critical, but I don't think a mentor or sponsor will do the hard yards. Make sure you do the hard yards and prove yourself again and again, ensuring you deserve the time and attention a mentor or sponsor will invest in you. Many people say there aren't any mentors out there, but that's not true--there are too many mentees who don't want to do the hard yards and serious IT folks who would be willing mentors value their time; it's in short supply, and their most precious resource. If you don't deserve it, you will lose it. I encourage people who are spending time doing too much for their mentees not to. Why? You need to work harder than your mentor, you need do it and do it and do it! You learn by doing!

Volunteer to student/professional chapters of technical non-profit organizations like ASME, IEEE and SAE will give more exposure to latest technologies and give the required connect for mentorships. Volunteering for projects with professors from leading institutes also add more value to the knowledge on live projects and how to complete it on time within the budget.

Don’t wait to long to start your first job in your new IT field. Several years ago, I was asked how to get an edge for a competitive internship during college summer break. I said, offer to work for free. I can't tell you how many people were upset with me for that guidance. Let me put it in perspective for you. What do you know? Are you exceptional in adding value to an organization so much that you should be paid for it? If so, apply for a job! If you want to learn, you are a theorist; if you have a degree and no experience, then you're an educated theorist. It means you're trainable, but it doesn't mean you bring value. You get paid for bringing value!

To this day, i still get my hands dirty! In my 40 years in IT I tackled a schools project to upgrade their computer lab. It was nice to get back to nuts and bolts of where my IT career started. Somewhere in that school is a kid that has the same drive and passion as what i have. And if i can spark the interrest of one single child that is the most awsome feeling ever! And it feels great to give something back to community and that type of satisfaction is the best reward ever. And yiu are uplifting a tech starved community.

One need to keep installing the latest version of oneself so that he/she is always in demand and not being left behind.

You cannot know and understand everything. But it helps to not search for a comfortable niche and comfort zone. After all, IT and IT needs are evolving over time - as are you. Looking back at my career I switched focus more than once. I feel very comfortable with it and am able to consult people in most areas of IT. Staying still and digging in is not an option these days.

If you aren't constantly learning, reading kbs, reading up on patches, innovations, etc. and figuring out what they mean to your position then you will quickly find yourself behind your peers. I have worked with various people with many years of IT experience and it was always clear who followed this and who didn't. Don't be afraid of new technology. Find a way to use it to your advantage.

If we define "experience" as ability to build according to requirements and also to solve issues in what has been built, then a good way to gain it would naturally be practicing it day to day, not refraining from doing "boring" or "dirty" tasks like legacy software maintenance or reducing technical debt.

Understand the three horizon of the business you are involved and plan ahead for the requirements of these horizons. It is always required to think ahead and update the skill sets required for these horizons of business to stay relevant in this competitive world.
