1 Assess your strengths and gaps

What are the specific knowledge and skills that you need to learn or improve to adapt to a different field or audience? Facilitators have many transferable skills like communication, influencing, presentation, and stakeholder management. Make a list of your top skills read them on a scale of one to 10. Use this list to compare against the job description of the new job you’re trying to apply for. What are the top skills for that job and which of those overlap with your skill sheet? Facilitators also have a lot of experience working with people. List in a star format S for situation, T for task, A for Action, and R for result.

Une SWOT est toujours utile mais il est important de faire une liste exhaustive des soft skills d'une part et des hard skills d'autre part qui seront facilement transferées d'un univers à l'autre. Car il faut des 2 pour que la transition soit réussie. L'IKIGA? est également un outil pertinent qui permet d'aborder l'angle : quel est mon talent dont la société a besoin et qui a de la valeur (financière) à ses yeux.

LinkedIn est fondamental pour se créer du réseau dans un secteur, un pays, une fonction... même quand l'on ne vient pas de cet univers. Mais il faut expliquer aux gens pourquoi vous souhaitez entrer en contact avec eux et donc avoir : - un message de mise en relation clair et avenant - un pitch efficace avec une demande concrète à partager ensuite dès la mise en relation effectuée. En général il s'agit de demander un petit temps d'échange pour répondre à quelques questions que vous aurez préparées. Il y a donc pas mal d'éléments à préparer en amont. Un seul clic de demande de mise en relation ne peut pas suffire.

Expand your network to include people outside your area of expertise. Use your fingerprint as a metaphor, each print being unique. You should have mentors from at least five unique industries. Build network across these multiple industries. in my years, I worked across 15 industries able to do this due to my network.

3 Update your portfolio and profile

The third step is to update your portfolio and profile to showcase your facilitation skills and achievements in relation to the new field. Your portfolio should include examples of your work, such as facilitation plans, tools, materials, outputs, or testimonials. Your profile should highlight your qualifications, credentials, values, and goals as a facilitator. You can use online platforms, such as your website, blog, or social media, to display your portfolio and profile. You can also create a resume or a cover letter that highlights your relevant skills and experience for specific job applications. Use the responses from point number one knowing your skills and experiences and include them in your LinkedIn profile and your CV. Always customize your CV for the industry that you’re applying for. At any given point I might have 5 to 8 different CVs that are customized for the industry that I’m applying for.

From your Varri network seek out opportunities for pro bono work. This work can give you valuable feedback and experiences. Look for secondment opportunities within your organization.

As a full-time facilitator across various industries and topics, transitioning is all about recognising your transferable skills and continuously upskilling. If you are a freelancer, be open to applying for different contracts in various industries to broaden your skill set. I facilitate workshops on a wide range of subjects, from public speaking in schools to financial education with local councils and care leavers, and leadership and management in the public sector. The key transferable skills include effective communication, the ability to quickly build rapport, strong interpersonal skills, confidently owning a space, and the capability to learn and teach efficiently.

The final step is to reflect and adapt by evaluating your progress and learning from your experiences. You can use tools, such as journals, surveys, or feedback forms, to document your reflections and learnings.
