Make sure that your network infrastructure is 10Gbe ready/Compatible. If not consider upgrading the switches, and other types of equipment. In my experience so far, most commonly I have used SFP+ transceivers.

In my point of view SFP+ are suitable transceivers when 10G infrastructure is ready for service and you do not want to upgrade other equipment

When designing the network you have to pay attention to the minimum and maximum light level you plan to provide each location. The higher the data rate the more critical the minimum or maximum data rate. The maximum for many receivers is 2.5 DBm before you overload the optic detector. Where as light levels below 10 DBm can introduce noise.

Ensure your connectors are either UPC or APC. UPC does the trick for 10GBE services. APC decreases connector loss and can improve return loss another 20%.

The link distances and the quality of the media plays a crucial role in choosing the right SFP and may need to factor in parameters like error correction. There’s always a trade off and a compromise in the production network you need to maintain a margin in terms of optical power levels which is ideal but not always feasible.

I agree with that the type of connection for the fiber network is very important. I have seen several types mentioned. I recommend using SC/APC connectors where ever possible. The reason is the lowest insertion loss and the highest return loss characteristics. UPC connections offer up to 50 db of return loss where as APC offer up to 60 db of return loss. Return loss minimizes reflected light which helps reduce noise issues.

10GbE can operate over both multimode and single-mode fibers. Multimode is used for short distances and single mode for longer distances. Crucial to use the appropriate transceiver and cable for different types.

In addition to this we can monitor the performance and power levels directly from transmission equipments through a NMS for active links.

Its important to ensure sure you have all the proper cleaning tools and processes for cleaning in place. Process like 1. cleaning prior to scoping 2. cleaning fiber ports first. 3. cleaning terminating fibers on both front and back of panels. etc.

Making sure you do bidirectional test and power meter level checking if they can accommodate the 10G ethernet and are result are within the specifications

Further adding to the list of Testing equiments are Fiber Inspection Microscope, Dispersion analyzer, VFL etc... Fiber Inspection Microscope is used to check the connectors are meeting the standards thus reducing the loss and damage of the signals. Dispersion Analyzer is used to check the chromatic dispersion and polarisation Dispersion. The above dispersions occur when a specific wavelength travels faster than the other wavelength. For Example red travels faster than other colors. In the case of transmission if not corrected can cause signal loss. To overcome dispersion a dispersion compensation module can be used.

GB Ethernet testing requires ethernet frame testing for more than 24 hours as like each optical links. Sent frame and received frames on the other side should be fitted less than %1-3 (I don't remember exactly but the ethernet test eq. operates that automatically anyway) loss after FEC - forward error connection..

During deployment of service(day of install), it is good practice to verify that the originating path(Hub) is sending light to the site and we do this by verifying that the port is enabled. If the port is enabled, check for receiving light and if there's no light present then one must OTDR the that path to see where the footage stops at and depending on the footage, it will dictate which group to refer the issue to such as OSP or ISP(Outside/Inside plant). If the footage matches the OTDR trace that OSP uploaded, then one could engage the appropriate group which in this case would be ISP.

Make sure to use Analyzer to test services before loading traffic. Using test device is the only guarantee to service quality and good performance.

Whenever you are working with optic fiber, cleaning is the above-all secret. If you are in doubt, just clean it again. Before soldering, before re-connectinh patches, before the first interface connection... Is better to spend a minute or two cleaning, than a whole month pursuing intermitent failures.

In addition to all advices from amazing experts in above point, Keeping fiber path with optimum value of test results is the key to work on 10 GHz traffice or even 50 GHz traffic. Minimize joints as much as possible, cleaning, perfect joint stabilizing (soldering), and ideal loops are very important to prepair high band width infrastructure,after that just upgrade quipment (high quality vendor strongly recommend) and execute with confidence.

Cleaning fibers connectors is key to have a good Bert and good Osnr. Somtimes you need to add attenuator on the reciever port . Field engineer should have attenuator with them . The link desiner shoud include the value of attenuator .
