What are the best ways to ensure thorough testing in programming?

If you are lucky enough to find a customer that is willing to test your software in production, this will reveail not only bugs but potential workflow issues.

Know What You Want: Before you start testing, make sure you understand exactly what your software should do. Test First, Code Later: Write tests before writing the actual code. It's like making a checklist of what you want your code to do before you start writing it. Test at Different Stages: Test your software in different ways, like checking small parts (unit testing), seeing how they work together (integration testing), and making sure everything works as a whole (system testing). Think About Mistakes: Don't just test what should happen, but also test what shouldn't happen, like entering the wrong password or too much data.

Have well-defined and documented requirements before starting testing. Clear requirements serve as a basis for creating effective test cases

Applying Test-Driven Development (TDD) or meticulous test case planning is considered an ideal approach when a developer is working within a framework such as Flask, Express, Django, or any other. However, this methodology may not be as effective when applied to roles such as data engineering or MLOps, where a significant portion of development relies on existing systems and the dynamic nature of incoming data. For data engineers and ML engineers, placing a higher emphasis on understanding the system becomes more crucial in these contexts.

From my experience, to test new software effectively, all scenarios that it will undergo should have been included in the design, is documented and clear. This means that before development, the test scenarios should have been planned beforehand. After development, it should undergo different testing levels. We usually start by component/unit testing, followed by functional testing, non-negative impact testing, then if applicable, we also do integration testing. Every level of testing is also documented as well.

Depending on the ecosystem your project lives there are some options. In JavaScript, you have plenty to choose from, but the most widely used for unit and integration tests are Mocha and Jest. One of the major aspects of a good product is how many different levels of test are performed before the product is released to a wider audience. Obviously Units tests, Integration tests, functional testing is a must. Along with these, one should always maintain regression test suites that are run as a part of CI CD processes to ensure that no new feature is breaking any of the existing flows and wouldn't cause disruption once the product goes live. Also every feature before it goes live should be thoroughly tested in a lower environment, stage environment, Pre production environment and then must be promoted to Production.

Code review is one of the most important phases in any of the program life cycles. There should be a multi level code review that ensures that the right coding standards are met. Peer code review not only gives a different perspective to the way the code can be written but also helps in catching minor details that one might have missed, and hence providing alternative ideas which may optimise the code in turn improving the performance. Git or any other SCM tools must be used for code reviews while adhering to best practices of having minimal files changed during each and every review so the reviews are more efficient and effective.

Everyone will test differently and with varying customs of how to use applications. It's essential to monitor your application with logs and automated reports. This way, you will guarantee that if something fails for anyone in the world, you will get to know it ASAP. It's also imperative to have a process to rollback or disable the feature on the fly (feature toggle system like LaunchDarkly). QA is not a perfect process; there's nothing like the synergy of millions of users to identify bugs. Engineering is an iterative process. Mistakes will occur. There's no perfect path, so we need to be ready to react quickly
