Such information is absolutely confidential and if shared before due time can cause havoc in the organization and even damage to its image and penalties. So there are usually strict NDAs around this role. Also, passwording highly sensitive documents and classifying emails helps.

It is important to understand that there will be a diversity of opinions and perspectives across your collection of stakeholders. There will be some who will be supportive of the initiative and see it as an opportunity to expand their influence or lessen their level of required effort. There will be others who are resistant to the initiative as they see it as a diminution of their import or as just not the right approach. In my experience, clearly understanding the beliefs, perceptions and attitudes of each stakeholder cluster is the first step. Once you’ve identify those, you can move into selecting the most secure, and effective mediums for communications. One thing to note once comms mediums are selected, is the tracking for consistency and true security. Having the stakeholders engage with the selected medium is essential in order to gauge if there are any risks to note around data breaches, hacking or disclosure of personal information. It is a continuous tracking and adjusting as you go based on risks identified.

My initial reaction was that change should be transparent. However, as a consultant involved in strategic planning for dozens of firms, the data/info collected from employees, customers, vendors, etc., can be sensitive, opinionated, and inflammatory. So while the change itself should be transparent, the source, specific data points, etc. might need to be known only to the collector, scrubbed, etc. The reason the collector should know the provenance of information is because there needs to be some weighing of information based upon source and impact. My interviews were conducted in person or via telephone and online surveys would also be used, then I'd aggregate information. It is important that people are heard, often anonymously.

I completely agree with this. The subject here is confidentiality. Everyone doesn’t have access to sensitive information in an organization because of the risk involved. As such, during change, these informations should also be protected especially if exposure has very dangerous implications for the organization. Transparency and access to information is a function of the department and the level in the organization structure. Just as we do not expect entry level professionals to have access to strategic level information or other sensitive information in the organization, the right policies and measures have to be put in place to ensures that these details are protected to prevent risk.

Whilst it is good practice in change to have clarity, transparency and ideally co-creation - the context of this article is to do with confidentiality of sensitive information, some of which has legal ramifications if not handled with an adequate level of due-diligence. There could even be GDPR implications, to name one. I totally agree with rewarding confidentiality _ Teamwork 101 should always be recognized and appreciated _ It is amazing how something small can go a long way _ One of the few things we did at a previous employer was to set aside time on specific days, usually Wednesday or Fridays and provide breakfast at the office for stakeholders to enjoy at their desk or in the designated Conference Room and give “Thank You Letters”, signed by the VP of Finance accompany with Gift Cards or Gas Cards _ At end of year kickoff, the stakeholder's names would be mentioned during the Thank You segment of the meeting.

When we are driving Change, the most important aspect for successful change is to earn trust. To earn trust, it is important to ensure that only positive and future oriented steps are taken. We can’t move forward while looking at the rear view mirrors. Any negative confidential information, if it is revealed, it should remain only with those responsible to drive Change successfully. All past has to be safely handled and best buried. At the same time as progress is made, maximize spread of small small successes and people recognized publicly.
