What are the best ways to engage stakeholders from diverse backgrounds in product innovation?

Stakeholders must completely understand and align on the use case for the product under consideration. Rigorous ideation of its viability and challenging that ideation by relevant stakeholders is critical before a product is designed, developed and introduced to market. This can be successfully done when all stakeholders are aligned on values such as customer obsession, ownership and desire to act quickly to understand needs, wants and requirements of the intended product and expected business outcomes of the end user. It all boils down to stakeholders asking themselves what is it that the customer will benefit from if we launch this product?

I always think of my role here as one of 'translator.' Pay really close attention to the way different stakeholders, especially cross-functional partners or those outside your organizational umbrella, speak and behave. There are many important cues here that can help bridge understanding, "language gaps" that come from different internal cultures, and generally ensure that the SPIRIT of the intended objective, not just the letter of it, is followed.
