The answer is in the details. Be prepared by knowing the impact of your actions. How many fundraisers have you managed? How much money did you raise at each one? How did you achieve this? Did you use social media, direct marketing, cold calling, reaching out to sponsors, corporate vendors, etc. How much more money did you raise than the person who was in this position before you? Were you the leader that successfully spearheaded a national fundraising campaign for XYZ Charity which raised $5,000,000 through corporate sponsorships, with notable sponsors: ABC Company, DEF Company and GHI Company? Or were you on a PTA committee that successfully increased fundraising proceeds by $6,000?

3 Tailor your examples to the situation

Another way to describe your fundraising experience is to tailor your examples to the situation and the questions that the interviewer asks. For example, if the interviewer asks you about a time when you faced a challenge or solved a problem, you can use the STAR method to structure your answer. The job posting is your guide to answering this question. Do they want you to be able to build relationships with corporate vendors? Tell them your experience with that, and include the names of the businesses you worked with. If you were able to partner with Target (for example) that holds more credibility than Mom and Pop Convenience Store. If the job is about making cold calls to donors, describe your experience and success rate, and include numbers and percentages. Always make sure that the information you are providing and the stories you tell are relevant to the exact job you are applying to. You want them to be able to see you in the position.
