What are the best ways to create a creative environment?

The place is definitely a key component to facilitate the flow of creativity. We for example make sure that our team members can work from where they feel most comfortable, with the occasional physical get together to work through something particular collectively. Creatives have their own way in which they can successfully develop ideas, while we strongly encourage small diverse teams of 2-3 to challenge each other on biases to drive exploration and innovative thinking.

Well, let's twist this one a little bit. Although one can agree that a lovely work place with sofas and hammocks is nice to lay down and "think" about creative ideas... there is more to this. A creative environment is not necessarily location based. I'd rather see it as context-based. It also "creates itself" when there is a real need or purpose. Like adaptation is in our DNA, finding creative ways to solve problems is too. I keep as a reference Virgil Hilts (Steve McQueen) in "The Great Escape"... who kept being sent into a small cell the time needed to come up with a way to escape the camp. 4 concrete walls and a bouncing baseball... generating stunning ideas to get everyone out. - Creative freedom... is everywhere! ??

Taking brainstorming sessions out of the office to get away from daily distractions. Creating a safe space where all ideas from all teammates are welcomed. Having lots of time to give constructive feedback. Some of the best ideas have stemmed from an obscure idea that others helped further develop!

I think a great start is always to have a get together outside, possibly visiting an art gallery or installation together to combine social with passion and build trust before undertaking a creative task. The physical movement and fresh air also helps to think beyond misconceptions, providing a sense of liberated thinking.

This one is flamboyant & does indeed boost teamwork. Again, main ingredient is sharing an "open mindset" and feeling well enough to trust everyone can and is welcome to. Then silly things can happen, from personal custom desks with Marvel or Star Wars characters, music moments, sparkling cookies brought by experimental cook artist, up to a team theme that drives & boosts. I remember working in a creative department where someone once said "Oh you play Call of Duty too?" That lead the team to create an agency server and play during lunch times or on free time... that lead to very odd camouflage decoration of the creative department that puzzled admin management for quite a while. - In the meantime : best creative output ever!??

The best ingridient to create the perfect mood is to be surrounded by people that are no judgemental neither closed to new proposals. A good team has a good attitude disposed to take some risk being very supportive with each member to enhance a safe environment in which everyone will feel comfortable and ready to propose. Prejudice, fear, negativity are all aspects that can block creativity while playfulness and humor can fuel the opportunity of achieving great ideas.

This question made me laugh. Aren’t we creatives supposed to be the ones who understand all kinds of clients and situations? What you need is to do your research thoroughly and resourcefully and start working. The “mood” should be in your mind and, later, in your piece. The rest (candles, aromas) are things that have nothing whatsoever connected to do with being creative. Just get a quiet, good spot and start working. Simple as that.

Engaging the senses can also be super beneficial. Food, kinesthetic imagery or a specific location can also promote creativity. Putting away technology helps all participants to be fully involved.

You should have creative and critical people around you. No matter who it is. Creative people might pull you with your own ideas and critical people might point you to problems, that can be solved with creativity. Often good ideas come from good conversations and discussions.

Not only does this mean gathering your physical resources: paper, pens a computer etc., but also think of people you can reach out to. Do you have someone in mind when you get stuck on a project? Do you have a mentor that can look over your work? Create a list of people you can use as a resource.

I would say that feedback is the most important thing, which includes feedback from within your diverse team, feedback from your clients and most importantly feedback from your audience. Creativity - aka the process to design/create something meaningful - is only done correctly through iterations, meaning that we put multiple feedback loops in place along the creation timeline. Starting with audience research, then internally to challenge our own potential misconceptions, then with the client and once we have something to test available, we put it in the real situation and analyse everything. This gives us data metrics based on real human interactions on which we train and develop the product/experience further and further.

I think feedback is just important for the outcome. And not the setting where it was produced. So you want to get feedback on your product and than reflect what part of the setting was adding to the process of creation and what not. Nobody can give you feedback on the creative environment you individually need. But: they can give impulses and recommendations like a great new shelf that fits into your room, a nice frame for the picture on your desk or new materials to work with if they know you well. All of that might bring new ideas for you.

Every pitch or projects undergoes a so called 'post-mortem' (which should actually be post-vita), where we come together to analyse and evaluate in detail as a team what went well, what went wrong and where we can improve next time. This is an extremely important part of the process, since we a recognising the achievement of everyone involved (and not just a director) and through this togetherness, we can be very critical of ourselves, while also be proud of what we have achieved as a team. Magical creative work and creating a meaningful experience for the audience is always a team effort in our industry (both our team and the of course the client team collaborating closely), due to the complexities when technology meets storytelling.

Celebrating is such a huge key to a creative environment, but also to a succesful or amazing project. I often find that one should even plan in the celebration when I create plannings my very first thing is to go the end of the project and plan a smashing and fun party! Equally so always encourage and find ways to celebrate as often as you can, plan it in, or hang up a disco ball and pop a champagne on Wednesday evening and call it celebration evening, where you celebrate mistakes, failings and achievements.

Lorsque l'on reconnait le travail bien fait, nous développons une confiance accrue dans nos capacités créatives, ce qui nous pousse à prendre des risques calculés et à explorer de nouvelles idées.

I would allow my entire team to work on a brief for a day. Then we would evaluate the ideas together. We would take the best one or two ideas forward. This was done without bowing to hierarchies. Even the way art and copy were paired up to take the selected ideas forward was based on (1) who actually came up with the ideas and (2) who could best make them come to life. This was not the system the rest of the agency followed but my team delivered the best results with this approach.

Critical thinking and diverse knowledge are crucial for creativity in a team, therefore we host a debate among our team once a month, where two opposing opinions meet to discuss and debate their differences. This serves as a platform for everyone to challenge new trends, gimmicks, thoughts and innovations so that we as a team can develop our critical thinking and become more rational creatives, bridge knowledge caps and break down biases, allowing us to approach briefs, projects and challenges - involving new trends - with a more mature and intellectual point of view.

I believe you can be creative in any environment, there is no wrong or right way to set up your space for creativity. Nothing really matters except that you feel safe in your space. If you have a creative block, talk it out with someone. Bouncing ideas off a friend or colleague or just having someone listening as you talk out loud can help push you past your sticking point and get the creative juices flowing again.
