Pitching to investors is one of the most crucial skills for private equity professionals. You need to convince them that your fund, strategy, and portfolio companies are worth their money and trust. I have done some modest crowdfunding investing in about 15+ startup companies across a range of industries. I focus first on the idea/product, how revolutionary it might be and the early interest or acceptance by the market. Next, I am interested in the founder, their background and commitment to the idea. It is important that the founder honest and fully aware of the journey to market. A lot can be learned from personal communications with the founder. The pitch to raise capital has to be thorough and competent in all aspects. It doesn't have to be "captivating", but it does need to be realistic and professional with product development timelines, competitors, use of money raised, addressable market, and a valuation.

You need to hook your investors from the start with a strong headline, a clear problem statement, and a unique value proposition. Then, you need to back up your claims with relevant evidence, such as market analysis, track record, case studies, and testimonials. Finally, you need to end with a clear call to action, such as inviting them to a follow-up meeting, sending them a term sheet, or asking them to join your network.

You want to focus on the key points that matter to them, and explain them in simple and accessible language.
